IBM Support

Which drive bay to use when installing a single drive - IBM Tape Library (3361)

Troubleshooting

Problem

The Library is not being seen during boot by the HBA, but the HBA does see the tape drive. This would be the same with the operating system as it will only see the tape drive and not the Library itself.

Symptom

The Library is not being seen during boot by the HBA, but the HBA does see the tape drive.

This would be the same with the operating system as it will only see the tape drive and not the Library itself.

Affected configurations

The system is configured with one or more of the following IBM Options:

  • 4U Universal Tape Library, Option 33614LX

This tip is not hardware specific.

This tip is not software specific.

Solution

When configuring a single tape drive sled into a 4U Universal Tape Library, Option 33614LX, the user must place it in bay 0.

Drive Bay 0 is the bay that is the bay on the right hand side when standing from behind the Library.

Once the user has a drive sled connected into this drive bay, the user can now communicate to the library itself as it passes communications back to the library from this drive bay only.

Additional information

This is working as designed.

In order to communicate from the Host to the Automation, it must pass through the drive sled in drive bay 0. Once the user has placed the drive in this bay, the user will now be able to see the Automation via the HBA, and operating system.
