Operating system recognized DSM disk as primary disk - IBM BladeCenter

Troubleshooting

Problem

On BladeCenter-S, when a user uses both the on-board LSI 1064E controller and SAS Expansion Card (CFFv) controller and install operating system on system, the operating system recognize the drive in DSM as primary number drive (like DISK0 on Microsoft Windows/SDA on Linux), and drive which connected to on-board controller as secondary number drive (like DISK1 on Microsoft Windows/SDB on Linux).

Issue

On BladeCenter-S, when a user uses both the on-board LSI 1064E controller and a SAS Expansion Card (CFFv) controller and installs the operating system on the server, the operating system recognizes the drive in the DSM as the primary number drive (like DISK0 on Microsoft Windows/SDA on Linux), and the drive which is connected to the on-board controller as the secondary number drive (like DISK1 on Microsoft Windows/SDB on Linux).

Affected configurations

The system may be any of the following IBM servers:

  • BladeCenter S, type 8886, any model
  • BladeCenter HS21 XM, type 7995, any model
  • BladeCenter HS21, type 8853, any model

The system is configured with one or more of the following IBM Options:

  • IBM BladeCenter SAS Expansion Card (CFFv), option 39Y9190

This tip is not software specific.

Additional information

This is working as designed.

When both controllers are enabled, the operating system will recognize the SAS Expansion Card as controller 1, and recognize the on-board controller as controller 2. The controller recognition rule depends on PCI type/ PCI bus/ PCI slot number which Controller is connected. LSI controller utility can change "Primary Boot controller" by "Boot order" option, but the operating system recognition rule cannot change.

If the user wants to change drive number, call each operating system vendor and ask how to modify it.
