RETAIN tip: H181538
Symptom
When using any IBM BladeCenter SAS expansion card (CFFv), option 39Y9190, the WWN field is not populated in the Advanced Management Module (AMM) Unique ID field.
Affected configurations
The system may be any of the following IBM Servers:
- BladeCenter S, type 1948, any model
- BladeCenter S, type 7779, any model
- BladeCenter S, type 8886, any model
The system is configured with one or more of the following IBM Options:
- Emulex 4 Gb Fibre Channel expansion Card (CFFv) for IBM BladeCenter, option 43W6859
- Emulex 4 Gb SFF Fibre Channel Expansion Card, option 39Y9186
- QLogic 4 Gb Fibre Channel Expansion (CFFv) Card for IBM BladeCenter, option 41Y8527
This tip is not software specific.
Solution
This behavior will be corrected with the next Disk Storage Module (DSM) firmware release.
The target date for this release is scheduled for third quarter 2008.
The file will be available from the IBM System x Support web site at the following URL:
Additional information
This issue affects all supported SATA drives in BladeCenter S because the SATA Options have a multiplexer that makes them dual-ported. SATA drives show up in a "fault" state in the SAS Connectivity Module as well as the SATA drives possibly going offline in the operating system.
With respects to the DSM firmware, there is an interoperability issue between the SAS expander and the multiplexer. After a reset the multiplexer is trying to send the InitialFIS (DriveSignature) by asserting XRDY to the expander, but the expander is not responding with RRDY to accept it.
This issue has been resolved by correcting RRDY response to XRDY assertions in the next DSM firmware release.
