Symptom

UpdateXpress Installer fails to detect Emulex Firmware version, when Emulex Core Kit is installed as the Emulex utility tool on any Microsoft Windows operating system.

Affected configurations

This tip is not machine specific.

The system is configured with one or more of the following IBM Options:

• Emulex 4 Gb Fibre Channel Dual Port PCI-e Host Based Adapter, Option part number 42C2071
• Emulex 4 Gb Fibre Channel HBA PCI-X Adapter Dual Port for IBM System x, Option part number 42D0407
• Emulex 4 Gb Fibre Channel HBA PCI-X Adapter Single Port for IBM System x, Option part number 42D0405
• Emulex 4 Gb Fibre Channel Single Port PCI-e Host Based Adapter, Option part number 42C2069
• Emulex 4 Gb Fibre Channel expansion Card (CFFv) for IBM BladeCenter, Option part number 43W6859

The Emulex firmware for the Emulex Fibre Channel Card is affected.

The system is configured with at least one of the following:

• Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server, any service pack
• Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional, any service pack
• Microsoft Windows 2000 Server, any service pack
• Microsoft Windows 2003 Server, any service pack
• Microsoft Windows 2003 Server for 32-bit Servers, any service pack
• Microsoft Windows 2003 Server for 64-bit Servers, any service pack
• Microsoft Windows 2003 Server, Datacenter Edition, any service pack
• Microsoft Windows 2003 Server, Enterprise Edition x64, any service pack
• Microsoft Windows 2003 Server, x64 Edition, any service pack
• UpdateXpress System Pack Installer, any version

Solution

This behavior will be corrected in a future release.

The target date for this release is scheduled for Third Quarter 2008.

Workaround

Install Emulex HBAnyware Applications Utility on the Microsoft Windows operating system. The UpdateXpress Installer will then detect the Emulex Firmware version.

Additional information

This issue only occurs in Microsoft Windows. The cause is the UpdateXpress Installer can only detect the Emulex firmware when HBAnyware Apps Utility is installed in the default directory. Emulex Core Kit is installed in a different path.

The UpdateXpress Installer 2.00 version does not consider that the Emulex utility can be installed in a different location.
