Problem
When installing multiple Ethernet ports in a server system, including Ethernet on-boards and/or Ethernet add-in adapters, there can be a mismatch of the Ethernet port number assigned to a specific port, from a DOS or BIOS tool, with the Ethernet port number assigned to the same port in the operating system or operating system kernel. Users may encounter this mismatch when using the Ethernet port number for configuration to set up usage or event such as Wake on LAN.

For example, with a dual port Ethernet adapter having ports 0 and 1, DOS and Windows or Linux may make different port assignments as follows:
DOS or BIOS Utility:ETH0 -> port 0
ETH1 -> port 1
Windows or Linux:ETH0 -> port 1
ETH1 -> port 0

| Workaround |

Use other parameters such as MAC address to associate an Ethernet port number, as seen in an operating system, with the correct physical port.
Another way is with a physical test. Unplug the network cable from each physical port and see which Ethernet number in the operating system changes the link status.
