This RETAIN tip provides information on how to properly shut down any of the listed 2130 UPS systems.

Affected Configurations

The system is configured with one or more of the following IBM Options:

  • IBM UPS 1000, type 2130, any FRU
  • IBM UPS 10000, type 2130, any FRU
  • IBM UPS 1500, type 2130, any FRU
  • IBM UPS 3000XHV, Option 2130R31 (Withdrawn), any FRU
  • IBM UPS 3000XLV, Option 2130R30 (Withdrawn), any FRU
  • IBM UPS 5000, type 2419, any FRU
  • IBM UPS 750, type 2130, any FRU
  • IBM UPS 7500, type 2130, any FRU

Additional Information

Under certain circumstances, an IBM UPS may have to be turned off completely in order to complete some maintenance tasks. Turning off these UPS systems completely is also referred to as switching them "Brain Dead."

In order to completely shut down any of the listed IBM UPS systems, perform the following steps:

  1. Ensure that all of the attached load is properly shut down and tuned off.
  2. Press the power off button on the UPS front panel or display bezel until a click is heard. The unit is still running at this stage and the front panel or display bezel may still be illuminated.
  3. For these UPS systems, perform the following steps:
    1. 750 VA, 1000 VA, 1500 VA, 5000 VA units: Switch off the circuit breaker of the utility power that goes to the UPS.
    2. 3000 VA, 7500 VA, 10000 VA units: Switch off the units input circuit breaker.

  4. Press the power off button until a click is heard. The Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) on the front panel/display bezel are no longer illuminated. The unit is completely switched off.

This procedure has to be performed, as switching off the UPS only while still on utility power or when the relevant circuit breaker is switched off does not turn off the UPS as such. The batteries of the UPS still provide power to all internal electronics.
