Problem

When viewing PCI slot information in F1 BIOS, adapter information for devices installed in slots 1 and 2 of the PCI-E riser is not displayed. The slot is listed as "Empty Slot". This data is found under Advanced Setup and then under PCI Slot/Device information.

Symptom

When viewing PCI slot information in F1 BIOS, adapter information for devices installed in slots 1 and 2 of the PCI-E riser is not displayed. The slot is listed as "Empty Slot". This data is found under Advanced Setup and then under PCI Slot/Device information.


Affected configurations

The system may be any of the following IBM servers:

  • System x3650, type 7979, any model

The following system BIOS level(s) are affected:

  • 1.05 and below

This Tip is not operating system specific.

The system is configured with F2 Diagnostic ROM.

  • The system F2 Diagnostic ROM diagnostic did complete.
  • The system F2 Diagnostic ROM diagnostic fails.

This Tip is not option specific.


Solution

This behavior will be corrected in a future BIOS release.

The target date for this release is scheduled for Third Quarter 2007.

Workaround

None.


Additional Information

This server supports both PCI-E and PCI-X risers. The onboard PCI-E slots claim slots 1 and 2. When installed, the PCI-X riser claims slots 3 and 4. When installed, the PCI-E riser claims slots 5 and 6. The BIOS only shows data for slots 1, 2, 3, and 4. Slots 5 and 6 are masked from the user.
