RETAIN tip: H19691
Symptom
---
The Baseboard Management Control (BMC) diagnostic test fails. The error message shows an I2C Bus failure. This occurs when the test is attempted from the system bootable diagnostics, option F2, during POST.
Affected configurations
---
The system may be any of the following IBM servers:
- System x3755, type 8877, any model
- This Tip is not software specific.
- This Tip is not option specific.
Solution
---
This behavior will be corrected in a future release of BMC code.
The Target date for this release is scheduled for Second Quarter 2007.
The file will be available from the IBM System x Support web site at the following URL:

Workaround
---
An I2C bus failure is very possibly a false failure message. To verify that the I2C bus is functioning properly, use the diagnostics tool to read the BMC messages log. This can be achieved by going to "System -> System Event Log" from within the bootable diagnostics.
By itself, the act of reading the BMC message log uses the I2C bus. If the logs can be read, the I2C bus is operating correctly and the diagnostic bus failure message can be ignored.
Additional Information
---
A problem with the self-test code in BMC was causing it to report a false failure of the I2C bus.
