Purpose
---
This ECA provides for 2900 w power supplies in a limited number of IBM BladeCenter H systems.
This ECA is "MANDATORY".
This ECA is scheduled to be withdrawn June 29, 2007.
USA customers should order parts for this ECA by contacting the IBM National Deployment Support Center (NDSC) at the following phone number between the hours of 8:00 A.M. to 8:00 P.M. EST.
NDSC Support Center: (877) 217-1037
All other geographies should use normal IBM Service Provider Procedures.

Physical Check

A system qualifies for this ECA when all of the following conditions are met:
-
The system may be any of the following IBM servers:
- BladeCenter H, Type 8852 and 7989, any model
- BladeCenter H, Type 8852 and 7989, any model
- The 2900 w power supply is part number (p/n) 39Y7349 (FRU p/n 39Y7350), has header code K12D3, and date code number 643xxx or greater.
The complete serial number (S/N) example 11S39Y7349ZK12D3643xxx.
- The affected system's serial numbers are listed in the following text file:
ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/systems/support/bp_system_x/eca070sn.txt
Note: This file contains known Machine Type / Serial Number of systems having power supplies which we know needs to be replaced.
However systems not in this list that have Power Supplies with header code K12D3, and date code number 643xxx or greater should be replaced per ECA instructions.
- The system has the symptom described below.
Symptom
---
The 2900 w power supply (p/n 39Y7349 and FRU p/n 39Y7350) was assembled with the incorrect transformer ferrite core.
The core eventually saturates and either destroys the Field Effect Transistor (FET) or the power supply's Over Thermal Protection (OTP) shuts down the power supply.
Note: There is no smoke if the FET fails, as it fuses open. There is no safety concern when these power supplies do fail.
Prerequisites

None.
Detail
---
Supplier assembled power supplies with the incorrect transformer ferrite core on about 1450 units and 419 systems were shipped. (Incorrect transformer ferrite core was specified as alternate p/n ; primary p/n was correct.)
Bad stock has header code K12D3, and serial number higher than 6435SK.
The complete S/N is 11S39Y7349ZK12D3643xxx and after. Good stock has date codes / serial numbers lower than 643xxx. In addition, Stock with header code K1034 is good.
Note: K1034 began production on June 10, 2006.
All affected power supplies are to be replaced since it is expected that 100 percent of all affected stock will eventually fail.
Fix
---
Replace BladeCenter H 2900 w power supply FRU p/n 39Y7350 with FRU p/n 39Y7364.
If two susceptible power supplies power the same domain and one is removed, the other power supply must provide all the power, thus making a greater risk for the second power supply to fail since it is already in a weakened state.
If there are two susceptible power supplies powering the same domain, the safest replacement method to ensure there is no data loss is to shut down the BladeCenter H chassis and then do the replacements.
If there are two susceptible power supplies powering the same domain and a hot swap is preferred, switch out the power supplies quickly to avoid power down in that power domain.
Notes
---
This ECA is "MANDATORY".
Mandatory = Proactively locate all affected systems and apply as soon as possible. Do not wait for the system to exhibit the failure symptom.
This ECA is scheduled to be withdrawn June 29, 2007.
System Hours equal the estimated time that the machine is unavailable to the customer.
Service Hours (CE Hours) equal the total number of estimated hours required to install the FRU, including preparation, actual installation, testing, standby and reporting time.
Service Hours does not include travel.
Service Hours includes System Hours.
Parts in "Features" Section, under "B/M to be Installed" column, MUST BE Ordered Code "B".
Parts Disposition
---
The removed parts are the property of IBM and should be returned as per your country guidelines and local branch office procedures.
