Resolving The Problem

Source

RETAIN tip: H186038

Symptom

System boots up with ServeRAID controller kernel panic error message during POST if ServeRAID-8i Controller or ServeRaid 8i SAS RAID is installed in Slot-6 and an Adaptec Ultra320 SCSI Controller is installed in Slot-5.

Affected configurations

The system may be any of the following IBM eServer systems:

  • xSeries 206m (Type 8485), any model
  • xSeries 206m (Type 8490), any model

The system is configured with the following ServeRAID options:

  • ServeRAID-8i Controller, Option part number 13N2227, replacement part number 13N2233
  • ServeRAID-8i SAS RAID, Option part number 39R8729, replacement part number 39R8731
Solution

Download and install IBM ServeRAID 8i firmware version 8.30 or later available end of second quarter 2006 from the IBM Support web site.

Workaround

Install the Ultra320 SCSI Controller from Slot-5 to Slot-4, but it only applies to the xSeries 206m (Type 8485 and 8490).

Additional information

The xSeries 206m (Type 8485 and 8490) will POST with an error message that indicates a controller kernel panic if an Ultra320 SCSI 2 Controller (part number 13N2249) is installed in Slot-5 and a ServeRAID 8i Controller (option part number 13N2227) or ServeRAID-8i SAS RAID (option part number 39R8729) is installed in Slot-6.

Server Proven Web site has been modified with the condition to allow only one of the two cards to be installed in the systems. Please reference Server Proven SCSI/RAID controller Matrix table by clicking the check mark for ServeRAID 8i, ServeRAID 8i SAS RAID controller and U320 SCSI RAID controller.
