Problem

A SCSI bus adapter is required between a "Wide" SCSI cable (16bit) and "Narrow" SCSI devices (8 bit), such as CD-ROMs or any 8 bit tape drive. Care must be exercized when installing these type of devices to prevent misplugging. The adapter is

Resolving The Problem

A SCSI bus adapter is required between a "Wide" SCSI cable (16bit) and "Narrow" SCSI devices (8 bit), such as CD-ROMs or any 8 bit tape drive.
 
Care must be exercized when installing these type of devices to prevent misplugging.
 

  • The adapter is keyed, however some tape drives have connectors that do not have the corresponding keyway. This allows the adapter to be mis-plugged by one pin position in either direction.
  • Mis-plugging one direction has been known to cause computer systems to shut down (due to power supply self-protection circuitry). When this condition is corrected, the system power supply will operate normally. (Power supply self-protect is explained on page 290 of the PS/2 Hardware Maintenance Manual S52G-9971-01, dated Sept, 1993.)
  • Mis-plugging in the other direction has been know to cause the device to be unrecognized by the SCSI controller (configuration failures).
  • When checking for connection issues with SCSI converters, always check for bent pins on both cables and devices.
