Symptom
---
When the primary node contains a ServeRAID 8i adapter, and there is no ServeRAID 8i in the secondary node, then the following error may be seen:
32 WARN SERVPROC Software NMI
33 INFO SERVPROC SMI Handler reporting SERR PCI Event: Received split completion error message on primary bridge Slot-Number = 0. Bus-Number = 15. Device ID = 0x2a1. VendorID
34 ERR SERVPROC System Error PCI Bus
35 ERR SERVPROC SMI handler has reported a PCI SERR
Note: Symptoms may be seen when running any Linux based operating system, including VMware, or when loading ServerGuide, running UpdateXpress, and after updating system firmware.
Affected configurations
---
The system may be any of the following IBM servers:
- System x3950 E, type 8874, any model
- System x3950 E, type 8879, any model
- System x3950, type 8872, any model
- System x3950, type 8878, any model
- xSeries 460, type 8872, any model
- xSeries MXE-460, type 8874, any model
The system is configured with one or more of the following IBM Options:
- ServeRAID-8i Controller, Option 13N2227, replacement part number 13N2233
This tip is not software specific.
Solution
---
None. This is a design limitation.
Workaround
---
Check that the on-board SAS controller is disabled in any node that does not have a ServeRAID 8i controller when there is a ServeRAID 8i in the primary node. This check should be performed after updating system firmware or running the Server Guide CD.
Additional information
---
Updating firmware in a secondary node may force the on-board SAS controller to an enabled state by default. Note that running the Server Guide may update the ServeRAID 8i controller to a minimum firmware level as part of the normal operation. The on-board SAS controller should be disabled in a secondary node if there is a ServeRAID 8i in the primary node to avoid the symptoms. For additional workarounds with Server Guide, please refer to the Server Guide User's Guide, Chapter 5 "Limitations."
