System turns off with VRM power faults (VRM or CPU BRD LEDs) - IBM eServer xSeries 366

Troubleshooting

Problem

RETAIN tip H184642: On rare occasions, nine or ten seconds after the server is DC powered on, it will DC power off with VRM or CPU BRD LEDs lit.

Resolving The Problem

Source
RETAIN tip: H184642

Symptom
On rare occasions, nine or ten seconds after the server is DC powered on, it will DC power off with VRM or CPU BRD LEDs lit. The BMC log (if it is not full) will indicate that a VRM faulted. The RSA II log will indicate that a VRM faulted if the DC power on takes place 2 minutes after AC power is applied.

Affected configurations
The system may be the following IBM eServer xSeries server:
  • x366, type 8863, any model
The system is configured with the following RSA option:
  • IBM Remote Supervisor Adapter II SlimLine marketing part number 73P9341, replacement part number (FRU) 73P9324
Solution
Upgrade to BMC firmware level 31b or later (available 4th Quarter 2005).

Workaround
Power the server on once more and ignore the log entries.

Additional information
On rare occasions, the BMC will detect a false power good fault in the VRD or VRM HW 5 seconds after DC power is turned on. The system is turned off nine or ten seconds after the server is DC powered on. The corresponding VRM or CPU BRD LEDs will be lit. SEL entries are made if possible.
