RETAIN tip: H183928

Symptom

Loss of management IP connectivity with the BladeCenter InfiniBand Switch Module, which results in users being unable to communicate with the switch via the management ethernet network. The symptom can occur during the initial power on of the switch OR if the switch IP address is changed by any method other then
the use of the Management Module Web Interface.

Affected configurations

The system may be any of the following IBM eServer systems:

  • IBM BladeCenter, type 8677, any model

The system is configured with the following option(s):

  • TopSpin InfiniBand Switch Module for IBM BladeCenter Option part number 26K6454, Field Replacement Unit (FRU) 26K6452.

The Firmware level(s) affected is/are:

  • IB Switch 2.2.0 Build 428

Solution

This behavior will be corrected in a future release of New Switch Module Firmware. The target date for the release is scheduled for: 2nd Quarter, 2005. It will be available from the IBM xSeries support Web site.

Workaround

Use BladeCenter Management Module Interface to set switch module to the desired IP address.

  1. Point your Web browser to the Management module web interface
  2. log on
  3. select I/O module management from the left column list of options
  4. select the Bay-number of problem switch
  5. check and confirm the IP address, sub net and gateway address
  6. click save
    Note:
Even if the data in the field matches the desired configuration, click save to reapply the settings

Additional information

During the initial power on of the switch or when the switch IP is changed using a non-BladeCenter Management Module interface the switch is unable to commutation IP address changes to the Management Module. The workaround ensures that the setting of the IP address is initialized by the Management Module.
