Resolving The Problem

Symptom
The Management Module detects a POST timeout condition even though the "restore to factory defaults" process completes successfully. The Management Module Event log displays this condition as an error.

This occurs any time the user restores the Cisco Systems Intelligent Gigabit Ethernet Switch Module to its original factory defaults.

Affected configurations
The system may be any of the following IBM BladeCenter:
  • IBM BladeCenter, type 8677, any model
  • IBM BladeCenter HS40, type 8839, any model
  • IBM BladeCenter HS20, type 8678, any model
  • IBM BladeCenter HS20, type 8832, any model
  • IBM BladeCenter JS20, type 8842, any model
  • IBM BladeCenter T, type 8730, any model
  • IBM BladeCenter T, type 8720, any model
The system is configured with Version 12.1(22)AY or later diagnostics.

The system's diagnostics Fail.

The BIOS levels affected are:
  • Version 12.1(22)AY or later
The Firmware levels affected are:
  • Version 12.1(22)AY or later
Solution
This behavior will be corrected in a future release of BIOS. The target date for the release is scheduled for fourth Quarter, 2005. It will be available from IBM's xSeries Support web site .

Workaround
Restart the Cisco switch so it can re-run the POST diagnostics without following the restore process. The initial restore process completed, but took longer
than the Management Module allowed for this function.

Restarting the Cisco switch
  1. Go to the Management Module web interface.
  2. Select I/O Modules Power On/Of f.
  3. Select the Cisco switch.
  4. Select Restart . The Cisco switch will re-run the POST diagnostics without running the restore software. After approximately one minute POST will complete successfully.
Verifying POST completed successfully
  1. Go to the Management Module system status.
  2. Verify the Return Code for this Cisco switch is "FF.
  3. Go to the Event log to verify that the POST diagnostics completed successfully. The Event log should state that diagnostics did complete successfully. If this did not occur, note the error and call the HelpCenter.

Additional information
The workaround allows the saving of the successfully completed restore to factory defaults process. Re-running the POST clears any error indication noted by the Management Module during the restore to factory defaults process.
