Problem

Two hard disk drive tests are available in Diagnostics test suite - Fixed Disk Test and SCSI Fixed Disk Test. It may not be clear to determine which test is appropriate.

Symptom
Two hard disk drive tests are available in Diagnostics test suite:
  • Fixed Disk Test
  • SCSI Fixed Disk Test

Note: It may not be clear to determine which test is appropriate.

Affected configurations
The system may be any of the following IBM eServer xSeries systems:
  • IBM eServer xSeries 260, Type 8865, any model
  • IBM eServer xSeries 366, Type 8863, any model
  • IBM eServer xSeries 460, Type 8872, any model
  • IIBM eServer xSeries MXE460, Type 8874, any model  
Solution
Information in Details section below will be documented in Diagnostic Help screens and Problem Determination Guide (replaces HMM) . Target implementation is 3rd Quarter 2005.

Additional information
SCSI Fixed Disk Test - Diagnostic composes and sends SCSI commands through the ASPI driver directly to the hard disk drives.
  • not available for hardware RAID
  • recommended for the most thorough test
Fixed Disk Test - Diagnostic accesses drives using BIOS int 13h function calls.
  • some commands, e.g. verify, are assumed good by the int 13h call and not sent to the hard disk drives
  • recommended for a faster test
