Troubleshooting
Problem
This document tells you how to troubleshoot media tray problems - IBM eServer BladeCenter
Resolving The Problem
- To begin troubleshooting, check the following top issues. If your issue is listed, select the link, otherwise, proceed to step 2.

Media tray access is lost temporarily during MM restart
CD and DVD drive issues
Diskette drive (FDD) issues
USB device issues
The BladeCenter chassis (Type 8677) has a common CD-ROM drive, diskette drive and USB port and ships with 13 blade fillers standard.

The media tray houses the customer interface card (CIC), on which is mounted the front panel LEDs and a 4 port USB controller hub. A USB diskette drive and IDE CD-ROM drive are mounted on the media tray. The external USB port can be used to attach a USB device other than the BladeCenter keyboard, monitor, or mouse.
System cabling is as follows:
One cable from the midplane to the CIC
One signal cable from the CIC to the CD ROM drive
One power cable from the CIC to the CD ROM drive
One cable from the CIC to the diskette drive
- Check the front panel LEDs on the information panel. Troubleshoot the component indicated if the LEDs indicate a problem.

- Power: When this green LED is on, power is present in the BladeCenter. When off, the power subsystem, AC, or the LED has failed, or the management module is absent or not functioning.
- Location: When this blue LED is on (steady or blinking), it has been turned on in response to a programmed condition or a remote request by the system administrator, to aid in identification for maintenance. If the component requiring maintenance is a blade server, the location LED on the blade server may also be on.
- Over temperature: This amber LED is on when the temperature in the BladeCenter exceeds the temperature limits, or a blade server reports an over-temperature condition. The BladeCenter may have already taken corrective action, such as increasing the blower fan speed. This LED turns off automatically when no over-temperature condition exists in the system.
- Information: When this amber LED is on, a noncritical event has occurred that should be looked at, such as the wrong switch module inserted in a bay, or needing to order more power modules because the first six blade slots are full. The event is recorded in the error log. Check the LEDs on the BladeCenter and the blade servers to isolate the component. This LED is turned off by the management module when requested by the user.
- System error: This amber LED is on when a system error occurs, such as failure on the power modules or a system error in a blade. An LED on one of the components or on a blade will also be on to further isolate the error.
- Check lightpath diagnostics for your BladeCenter:

BladeCenter (Type 8677)
BladeCenter JS20
BladeCenter HS20
BladeCenter HS40
BladeCenter T (Type 8720, 8730)
- Make sure that the BladeCenter unit has the latest level of firmware code installed.
- If these steps have not solved your problem, refer to "Need more help?"
When the BladeCenter management module is restarted, use of the media tray (CD-ROM drive, diskette drive, and USB port) is lost temporarily. If you or a failure condition initiates a management module restart while I/O activity is taking place on the media tray, the disruption can interrupt reads to the CD-ROM drive or lose data being written to a diskette.
Note: You can restart the management module through the Web interface to the management module or from a network management station such as the IBM Director console. Some failures on the BladeCenter unit can result in the management module restarting automatically.
Make sure there is no I/O activity on the media tray before you restart the management module.
