Troubleshooting


Problem

The LSI SCSI interface chip (located on the BladeCenter SCSI Blade Storage Expansion (BSE)) interacts with the TopSpin InfiniBand (IB) HCA (Host Channel Adapter - daughter card). This interaction yields Blade POST errors, Kernel Panics/halts at blade OSboot or the inability to use SCSI resources when the OS boots completely.

Symptom

The LSI SCSI interface chip (located on the BladeCenter SCSI Blade Storage Expansion (BSE)) interacts with the TopSpin InfiniBand HCA (Host Channel Adapter - daughter card). This interaction yields Blade POST errors, Kernel Panics/halts at blade OS boot or the inability to use SCSI resources when the OS boots completely.

Affected configurations

The system may be any of the following IBM BladeCenter:  
  • a BladeCenter HS40, Type 8839, any model.
  • a BladeCenter HS20, Type 8678, any model.
  • a BladeCenter HS20, Type 8832, any model.  

The system is configured with the following option(s):  

  • TopSpin InfiniBand Host Channel Adaptor Expansion Card for IBM BladeCenter Option part number 26K6457, replacement part number (FRU)26K6459.
  • IBM HS20 SCSI Storage Expansion Unit Option part number 26K4847, replacement part number (FRU)26K4851.
  • IBM HS20 SCSI Storage Expansion Unit 2 Option part number 26K4817, replacement part number (FRU)13N2363.   
Solution

Remove either InfiniBand HCA or BSE from the blade configuration.

Additional information

Removes unstable hardware interaction.
