Symptom

In the manufacturing process of a limited number of Cisco switches, the UUID was duplicated. This can cause a problem for those customers who use IBM Director to register their switches in an inventory. One of the switches with a duplicate UUID will not be logged.

The following UUIDs are known to be duplicated:

  • 44d7303ce5c111d89c21000f90f5c440
  • e0a1f2aa8daf11d8aeb6000f90ccebc0
  • 8b7b0ff2e68b11d8a53a000f90f5c440
  • 05a90926e51711d8a34b00115c5676c0
Affected configurations

The system may be any of the following IBM BladeCenters:

  • an IBM BladeCenter, type 8677, any model
  • an IBM BladeCenter T, type 8730, any model
  • an IBM BladeCenter T, type 8720, any model

The system is configured with BRET59D and later diagnostics. The system's diagnostics Pass.

The BIOS level(s) affected is/are:

  • all

The Firmware level(s) affected is/are:

  • all
Solution

Install firmware version AY3 (or later) on the Cisco switch using the download and installation procedure described in the README file with the software.

Workaround

None. You must load firmware version AY3 or later on the Cisco switch, per the solution.

Additional information

The UUID for a limited number of Cisco switches is duplicated. This becomes a problem when the customer uses IBM Director to register their switches. If the customer has any of the affected UUIDs and uses IBM Director, the problem may occur. To determine the UUID value of the switch, the user must go into the management module system status and display the hardware VPD. Compare the UUID displayed with the known duplicated UUIDs.  If the switch UUID matches one of the four known duplicated, the user must load software version AY2 on the Cisco switch. Loading this software changes the manufactured installed UUID with a unique UUID identifier. This process is automatic when the software loads on the Cisco switch.
