Problem

When configuring VLANs (Virtual Local Area Network) on the IBM 4-Port Gb Ethernet Switch Module (ESM), you should be aware of this: If a port 802.1Q VLAN setting is configured as Tagged, and the PVID (Port VLAN Identification) setting for that port is changed to match that VLAN number, then the port setting will be changed from Tagged to Untagged.

Symptom

When configuring VLANs (Virtual Local Area Network) on the IBM 4-Port GB Ethernet Switch Module (ESM), you should be aware of the following:

  • If a port 802.1Q VLAN setting is configured as Tagged, and the PVID (Port VLAN Identification) setting for that port is changed to match that VLAN number, then the port setting will be changed from Tagged to Untagged.
Affected configurations

The system may be any of the following IBM eServer servers:  

  • BladeCenter, type 8677, any model
  • BladeCenter T, type 8730, any model
  • BladeCenter T, type 8720, any model

The system is configured with the following ESM options:  

  • 4-port Gigabit Ethernet Switch Module option part number 48P7054, replacement part number (FRU) 26K6482
  • 4-port Gigabit Ethernet Switch Module option part number 13N0568, replacement part number (FRU) 26K6482
Solution

None. The ESM is working as designed.
 
Workaround
  
Configure PVID settings first, and then configure settings for the VLANs.
 
Additional information

Since the main purpose of the PVID is for VLAN-unaware devices, it is anticipated that frames exiting the port should be Un-Tagged. If the port connects VLAN-aware devices, then the user can edit the VLAN and return the setting to Tagged, causing the port to egress tagged frames for the VLAN. The D-Link ESM is a VLAN-aware switch.

All frames within the switch are tagged. Port-based VLANs are implemented by PVID settings. Untagged frames arriving at a port are tagged with the VLAN ID specified by the PVID of the port.
 
PVIDs are limited to one per port. The default PVID for all ports of the switch is 1. All ports are initially untagged. Port-based VLAN settings partition the switch into VLANs for VLAN-unaware devices. Configuring a new PVID Number setting on the switch will generate a matching 802.1Q static VLAN with the PVID designated ports as Untagged members. The ESM forces non-egress ports to be configured with a Tagged setting because the port may be put into the egress port list of the VLAN dynamically.
