Resolving The Problem

Source
CMVC case: 237581

Symptom
System will not boot with a USB hard disk drive attached to any USB port on the system. The user will be prompted with the following error:

Disk Read Error
Use ctrl-alt-delete to restart the system

Affected configurations

  • IBM IntelliStation M Pro, type 6229, any model

Workaround
If you disable this feature in the BIOS Setup utility, the drive will not affect the system and it will boot up. Here are the steps to disable the USB boot option in the system BIOS:

  1. Press the Power button, then press the F1 key repeatedly, to enter the system BIOS.
  2. Go to the BOOT tab.
  3. Disable the USB Boot option.
  4. Choose Exit saving changes and restart the system.

Additional information
The BIOS sets the USB boot option to enabled by default. This will cause the system to try to boot to a USB hard disk drive first, and will stop with the Disk Read Error.
