IBM Support

False power supply failure LEDs and errors with RSA II - IBM eServer xSeries 365

Troubleshooting

Problem

When the system is in standby mode, the lightpath LEDs and the warning light are turned on, indicating a problem with one (1) or more of the power supplies, you will see (with the cover removed) either: The AC and DC LEDs illuminated. The fan speed in the power supplies will be at maximum speed. You may see a power supply warning message in the System Event Log (SEL), or The DC LED will not be illuminated. The fan speed in the power supplies will be at maximum speed. You will see a power supply non-redundant message in the System Event Log (SEL).

Resolving The Problem

Symptom

When the system is in standby mode, the lightpath LEDs and the warning light are turned on, indicating a problem with one (1) or more of the power supplies, you will see (with the cover removed) either:

The AC and DC LEDs illuminated. The fan speed in the power supplies will be at maximum speed. You may see a power supply warning message in the System Event Log (SEL).

-or-

The DC LED will not be illuminated. The fan speed in the power supplies will be at maximum speed. You will see a power supply non-redundant message in the System Event Log (SEL).

If you can remove the error condition by turning on your system with the ON/OFF switch, the power supply is OK.

Affected configurations

The system may be any of the following IBM eServer xSeries servers:

  • An xSeries 365, type 8861, any model
  • An xSeries 365, type 8862, any model
Solution

This behavior is corrected in the IBM eServer xSeries 365 Remote Supervisor Adapter II Firmware Update 1.03 (and later).

Additional information

The symptoms occurred because the power supplies issued a thermal warning. The thermal warning was set using a temperature we would not normally see when the system is powered on and operating with all eight system fans. The thermal warning temperature has been raised to a level to keep this condition from happening. The Environmental system code, which lights the fault LEDs, is being modified not to turn on the LEDs on the current power supplies, replacement part number (FRU) 74P4335.
