Resolving The Problem
SourceRETAIN tip: H181316
Symptom
Tape backup unit(s) do not show up in the SCSI scan even though power on ready light appears on the tape backup unit. Additionally, SCSI I/O errors could manifest out of a partially connected SCSI cable.
Affected configurations
The system is configured with one (1) or more IBM NetBAY 1U xSeries Tape Enclosures, model 4559-1UX.
Solution
Check backup devices SCSI connection by removing the top cover and visually inspecting the connector seating.
Workaround
If the tabs have been used to pull the backup device out of the bay of the 1U enclosure, it will be necessary to remove the top cover to the 1U enclosure to ensure that the SCSI and power connectors are fully seated.
Additional information
When performing actions that require the removal of a tape drive unit from the 1U enclosure, first ensure that power is removed from the tape backup device, then open the top cover to remove the SCSI 68-pin connector. If for some reason tape backup units do not show up in the SCSI scan but appear to have power, ensure that the SCSI connection has not become unseated.
The blue pulls on the guide rails make for ease of installation and/or removal, but can be a nuisance in that the drives can be pulled physically from the SCSI connector, if extracted too far out the front of the 1U enclosure.
