Symptom
One or more hard disk drives (HDD) are marked defunct (DDD) either during a ServeRAID cluster failover, or while a failed node is brought back online. The HDD may be a shared or non-shared resource in the configuration. Logical Drives may be inaccessible as a result, including operating system boot drives.

Affected configurations
The system is configured with the following option(s):
  • an IBM ServeRAID-4H Ultra160 SCSI Controller, option part number 37L6889, replacement part number (FRU) 37L6892 (controller), replacement part number (FRU) 37L6902 (cache daughter card), replacement part number (FRU) 37L6903 (cache battery)
  • an IBM ServeRAID-4L Ultra160 SCSI Controller, option part number 37L6091, replacement part number (FRU) 09N9540
  • an IBM ServeRAID-4M Ultra160 SCSI Controller, option part number 37L6080, replacement part number (FRU) 37L7258
  • an IBM ServeRAID-4M Ultra160 SCSI Controller (Japan), option part number 19K0565, replacement part number (FRU) 00N9543 (Japan)
  • an IBM ServeRAID-4Lx Ultra160 SCSI Controller, option part number 06P5740, replacement part number (FRU) 06P5741
  • an IBM ServeRAID-4Mx Ultra160 SCSI Controller, option part number 06P5736, replacement part number (FRU) 06P5737
Solution
This behavior is corrected in ServeRAID v6.00 and is available from the ServeRAID Software Matrix.

Workaround
A special firmware build (version 5.12.03T) is available from the IBM Support Center that corrects the problem. The existing BIOS, firmware, and device driver should be at version 5.10.21 or version 5.11.05 before flashing the firmware to version 5.12.03T.

With this firmware, the following expected events will occur:

  1. ServeRAID Manager will show a mismatch among the BIOS, firmware, and device driver.
  2. An "Event ID 11" message (source is nfrd960 or ipsraidn) will occur at the very beginning of the Microsoft Windows load because of the mismatch between the firmware and the installed BIOS and device driver.
  3. The RAID configuration will become corrupted if the adapter is flashed back down to version 5.11.05 (or lower) level.

This fix will be incorporated in ServeRAID v6.00 (targeted for release in April 2003), and the first two events above will clear up because the BIOS, firmware, and device driver will be a consistent level. The third constraint will remain because ServeRAID v6.00 firmware uses a new RAID configuration structure which is not downward compatible.
 
The IBM Support Center shall track all customers that receive the fix.

Additional Information
Under specific conditions of cluster failover and recovery, the ServeRAID firmware would occasionally be unable to communicate with some drives. It would then mark those drives defunct. The fix enhances the links between the firmware and drives, thus eliminating the problem.
