Symptom

Some IBM IntelliStation M Pro workstations cannot play DVD videos. This is an example of the error message: "Create overlay failed, Please lower your screen resolution or color depth and try again"

Affected configurations

The system may be any of the following IBM IntelliStation workstations:

  • An IBM IntelliStation M Pro, type 6229, models 16U, 26U, 36U
  • An IBM IntelliStation M Pro, type 6850, models 46U, 56U, 66U

The following network operating systems are affected:

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional, with any Service Pack applied
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server, with any Service Pack applied
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server, with any Service Pack applied
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Datacenter Server, with any Service Pack applied

Workaround

You can get the Cyberlink Power DVD 4.0 to play DVDs. Although this is not supported, it has been seen to work.

Additional information

The 3DLabs Wildcat video driver does not support direct video overlay, which is required by most DVD software players.
