Linux hard hangs (black screen, mouse and keyboard unresponsive) while the system is running XScreenSaver version 3.33.

Symptoms

Linux hard hangs (black screen, mouse and keyboard unresponsive) while the system is running XScreenSaver version 3.33.

Affected configurations

The system may be any of the following IBM eServer xSeries servers:

  • IBM eServer xSeries 445, type 8870, any model
  • IBM eServer xSeries 440, type 8687, any model
  • IBM eServer xSeries 380, type 8683, any model
  • IBM eServer xSeries 360, type 8686, any model
  • IBM eServer xSeries 350, type 8682, any model
  • IBM eServer xSeries 342, type 8669, any model
  • IBM eServer xSeries 330, type 8674, any model
  • IBM eServer xSeries 300, type 8672, any model
  • IBM eServer xSeries 232, type 8668, any model
  • IBM eServer xSeries 220, type 8646, any model

The network operating system (NOS) affected is Red Hat Linux, version 2.1 Advanced Server.

Workaround

Do not run XScreenSaver v3.33.

Additional information

Note: We strongly recommend that you disable all screensavers on a server.

  • Screensavers have historically caused problems such as panic, hang, memory leaks, and so on.
  • Screensavers use valuable system resources which could be put to much better use, especially on a server.
