Resolving The Problem

IBM Netfinity Gigabit Ethernet adapter fault tolerance setup for Microsoft Windows NT 4.0

This document details the fault tolerant setup of the IBM Gigabit Ethernet adapter under Microsoft Windows NT 4.0. While it is possible to install the IBM Gigabit Ethernet adapter as part of the regular Operating System install, this document assumes that the Operating System is already installed and up and running. This was done to keep the procedure as simple as possible.

The install will require the Gigabit Ethernet adapter drivers. The driver image contains the Network Interface Card (NIC) driver and the AltVLAN protocol for pairing under Microsoft Windows NT. The AltVLAN protocol is used to set up the actual teaming and load balancing.

To setup the fault tolerant pair
  1. With the server powered off, install the NICs in the system. Try to install the adapters in the same type of slot, i.e. both 64-bit, both hot swap, etc.
  2. Power up the server and boot up to the Operating System. Microsoft Windows NT 4 does not detect NICs after the initial install.
  3. Right-click Network Neighborhood and select Properties.
  4. Select the Adapters tab of Network Properties and select the Add button. The Add Network Adapter dialog box opens.
  5. Place the driver diskette in the diskette drive and select Have Disk. After scanning the diskette, the "Select OEM Option" dialog box opens:

  6. The IBM Gigabit Ethernet NIC should already be highlighted. Click OK to load the driver. The Network Properties will now display the NICs.
  7. Next, right-click Network Neighborhood and select properties. Right-click one of the IBM Gigabit Ethernet adapters and select properties. The "Driver Properties" dialog box is displayed. The NIC status and configuration are displayed. This page displays the link speed and status, as well as the MAC address. The settings displayed below are the defaults:

  8. To create an adapter team, click the Team Configuration tab. A dialog box will open asking if you wish to create a new Failover Team. Click Yes.

  9. The Team Configuration tab is displayed. To create a team, click the Create a Team button. An IBM Netfinity Virtual Team is created.

  10. Now, highlight each NIC and click the << Add NIC button to add each NIC to the team.

  11. Add the second adapter to the team, then click the Close button.

  12. Under Network Properties, a new network connection appears, Netfinity Gigabit Virtual Team. Click to highlight this new connection and click the Properties... button.

  13. Here is where the user assigns the network properties for the fault-tolerant pair:

  14. Setup is now complete. Click the OK button to close the Microsoft TCP/IP Properties window.
To test the fault tolerant pair
  1. To test the fault tolerant pair, open up the Microsoft Windows NT system event viewer, and then unplug the cable going to the Primary adapter. You may have to refresh event viewer to see the error. The first error is "Event ID 20 - Adapter link down".

  2. The next message is "Event ID 1 - Active Adapter in a team changed". The secondary adapter has taken over.

  3. Plug the cable back into the primary NIC. This results in the message "Event ID 25 - media connect".

  4. Next, you get the message "Event ID 24", the adapter status lists the speed and duplexing information for the NIC.

  5. And finally, the message "Event ID 1 - Active adapter in team changed". The primary adapter has now taken control of the pair.

  6. Testing is complete. Click the Close button to exit the Event Detail window.
