Unable to backup a DDS/3 tape drive attached to a PCI Ultra160 adapter under Red Hat Linux 7.1 and 7.2 for IBM eServer xSeries 300.

Resolving The Problem

Source

RETAIN tip H174606

Symptom

The system is configured with a PCI Ultra160 SCSI Adapter in either PCI slot with a DDS3 tape drive attached.

  • When issuing the tar command to backup data to a tape drive, the DDS/3 tape drive is unresponsive.
Affected configurations

The system may be any model of the IBM eServer xSeries 300, type 8672 server.

The system is configured with the following options:

  • PCI Ultra160 SCSI Adapter, option part number 19K4646, replacement part number (FRU) 06P2215
  • IBM 12/24 GB DDS/3 4-mm internal SCSI tape drive, option part number 09N4041, replacement part number (FRU) 24P2388

The following network operating systems are affected:

  • Red Hat Linux, version 7.1
  • Red Hat Linux, version 7.1J
  • Red Hat Linux, version 7.2
  • Red Hat Linux, version 7.2J
Solution

As root, download and install the appropriate kernel RPM from the Red Hat Linux Errata Advisory RHSA-2001-129: http://www.redhat.com/support/errata/rh72-errata.html

If the DDS/3 tape drive is attached to the Ultra160 SCSI adapter in PCI slot 2, enter the Adaptec Configuration Utility by pressing the Ctrl and A keys during the adapter initialization in POST.

Select SCSI Device Configuration and verify the following SCSI settings for the DDS/3 SCSI device ID:

Send Start Unit Command = NO
Initiate Wide Negotiation = NO
Synch Transfer Rate = 5
