Problem

This document describes the Microsoft Windows 2000 / NT 4.0 error message "0x1E: KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED".

Resolving The Problem

Symptom
0x1E: KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED

KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED ***

Explanation
This error indicates that either file corruption has occurred, or system/file incompatibilities exist. It is a very common error code that indicates that a kernel-mode exception was not handled.

Possible causes

  • The system is configured with findfast.exe in Microsoft Office 97 (under Windows NT Server 4.0 with a Service Pack of less than 6 applied).
  • The file system may have become corrupted.
  • A driver may be incompatible or corrupt.
    • Particularly suspect video drivers, or Windows NT Win32k.sys
  • Lack of hard disk drive space (if occurred during Windows NT Installation).
  • System BIOS incompatibilities.

Parameters

  • The first parameter is the exception code that was not handled.
  • The second parameter is the memory address at which the unhandled exception occurred.
  • The third parameter is Parameter 0 of the exception.
  • The fourth parameter is Parameter 1 of the exception.

Actions

  1. Run CHKDSK.
  2. Ensure all hardware is compatible with Microsoft Windows NT.
  3. Remove / reinstall the IBM video driver, or boot to VGA-only mode to rule out the video driver.
  4. Check parameter2 (see below) to pinpoint the driver causing the problem.
  5. Upgrade the system BIOS to the latest level.
  6. If during Windows NT install, ensure adequate hard disk drive space exists in the install partition.
  7. Remove Findfast.exe from the system Startup group if you are using MS Office 97.

Usually the exception address (parameter2) pinpoints the driver or function that caused the problem.

Always note the address as well as the link date of the driver or image that contains the address.

A common exception address is 0x80000003, which means that a hard-coded breakpoint or assertion was hit, but the system was booted with the /NODEBUG switch.

Although this is a common stop code among systems, this problem should not occur very often.

If it occurs repeatedly, make sure a debugger is connected and the system is booted with the /DEBUG switch.

  • If this is the first time you have booted after installing new hardware, remove the hardware and boot again.
  • Check the Microsoft Hardware Compatibility List to verify that the hardware and its drivers are compatible with Windows NT.
  • If you are installing Windows NT for the first time, check the Windows NT system requirements, including the amount of RAM and disk space required to load the operating system.
  • Also, check the Hardware Compatibility List to verify that the system can run Windows NT.
  • If Windows NT is loaded and no new hardware has been installed, reboot with recovery options set to create a dump file.
  • If the message continues to appear, select the Last Known Good option when you reboot.
  • If there is no Last Known Good configuration, try using the Emergency Repair Disk.
  • If you do not have an Emergency Repair Disk, contact your technical support group.
