Resolving The Problem
If your tape device has worked, but now does not backup, try the following:
- Try new tape media or media from a different batch.
- Have there been any changes to your server hardware or software. Undo the change and try the tape device.
- Applying a service pack which could have overwritten SCSI driver. Reload correct SCSI driver from the IBM Support Site for the SCSI Controller.
- If new software has been installed on your server, check your backup software settings to make sure they have not changed.
- Confirm that the tape drive is still detected in the operating system and that the device driver is loading. If the drive is not detected, go back and check to see if the SCSI controller is detecting the device. Check the SCSI cable to confirm that it has not become loose or disconnected.

Try to use the native operating system backup software (NTBackup, SBackup, or Tar).
- Note: To use NTBackup, it is necessary to stop any services of the current backup software.
- If the native backup is successful, the tape device is fine and you will need to reinstall your backup software.
- If reinstalling the original backup software does not solve the issue, contact the backup software vendor for support.
- If the tape drive is still unable to backup using the native backup application, and there has been no hardware or software changes, clean the drive several times in a row.
- If the drive still will not perform a full backup, contact an IBM support technician at your local IBM Support Center. Support will likely request hardware, software, and or operating system logs to evaluate the problem further.
