GPM does not initialize mouse support correctly under SUSE LINUX v7.1 - Servers

Troubleshooting

Problem

GPM does not initialize mouse support correctly and cannot be started using "gpm -t newtype"

Resolving The Problem

Source

RETAIN tip: H173356

Symptom

GPM does not initialize mouse support correctly and cannot be started using "gpm -t newtype". The symptom described above occurs when the operating system does not properly detect that there is a USB mouse instead of a PS/2 mouse, or vice versa. The GPM parameters are hard set in the "/etc/rc.config" file.

Affected configurations

The system is any of the following IBM eServer IBM eServer xSeries servers:

  • An IBM eServer xSeries 342, type 8669, any model
  • An IBM eServer xSeries 340, type 8656, any model
  • An IBM eServer xSeries 330, type 8654, any model
  • An IBM eServer xSeries 240, type 8664, any model
  • An IBM eServer xSeries 232, type 8668, any model
  • An IBM eServer xSeries 230, type 8658, any model
  • An IBM eServer xSeries 220, type 8645, any model
  • An IBM eServer xSeries 200, type 8478, any model

The system is any of the following IBM Netfinity servers:

  • A Netfinity 8500R server, type 8681, any model
  • A Netfinity 7600 server, type 8665, any model
  • A Netfinity 7100 server, type 8666, any model
  • A Netfinity 6000R server, type 8682, any model
  • A Netfinity 5600 server, type 8664, any model
  • A Netfinity 5100 server, type 8658, any model
  • A Netfinity 4500R server, type 8656, any model

The system is configured with two processors.

The following network operating system (NOS) is affected:

  • SUSE LINUX, version 7.1.
Solution

This issue should be resolved in SUSE LINUX v7.2.

Workaround

Manually configure the mouse through YaST1:

  • Start YaST 1 by typing yast at a root prompt.
  • Select System Administration, > select Integrate hardware into system, > select Mouse Configuration.
  • Select the appropriate mouse type at this screen and select Continue.
  • At the Confirmation screen, select Yes.
  • Move the mouse around to confirm that GPM was started correctly.
  • Select Keep to keep the current configuration, or Change configuration to try again.
Additional information

The "GPM_PARAM=" variable in the "/etc/rc.config" file is hard coded during the installation. Running YaST1 changes this value to the correct value for the mouse.
