Affected configuration

The system is any of the following IBM eServer xSeries servers:

  • A xSeries 340, type 8656, any model
  • A xSeries 330, type 8654, any model
  • A xSeries 240, type 8664, any model
  • A xSeries 230, type 8658, any model
  • A xSeries 150, type 8658, any model
  • A xSeries 135, type 8654, any model
  • A xSeries 130, type 8654, any model

The system is any of the following IBM Netfinity servers:

  • A Netfinity 7600 server, type 8665, any model
  • A Netfinity 7100 server, type 8666, any model
  • A Netfinity 6000R server, type 8682, any model
  • A Netfinity 5600 server, type 8664, any model
  • A Netfinity 5500-M20 server, type 8662, any model
  • A Netfinity 5500-M10 server, type 8661, any model
  • A Netfinity 5500 server, type 8660, any model
  • A Netfinity 5100 server, type 8658, any model
  • A Netfinity 5000 server, type 8659, any model
  • A Netfinity 4500R server, type 8656, any model

The following network operating systems are affected:

  • Microsoft Windows NT, version 4.0 with Service Pack 4 or higher applied
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Datacenter Server
Solution

The driver for the I2C device was corrected in IBM Director v2.2, and later versions.

Workaround

There are 2 options:

Option 1
 Apply eFix IC28922.exe

Option 2
 Manually make the changes as outlined below:

  1. Stop the I2C device and disable it as follows:
    • Windows NT 4.0
      • via Control Panel > Devices
    • Windows 2000
      • via Device Manager by selecting View then Show hidden devices.
        Note: In Windows 2000, the I2C device is a hidden device which cannot be found without showing hidden devices first.
  2. Reboot the system.
Additional information

The I2C device installed by Netfinity Director/UMS should not be used on a system that has a Netfinity Advanced Systems Management PCI Adapter or onboard ASM Processor. The driver is used to communicate with the SMBUS controller contained in the onboard chipset on servers that do not have the ASM processors/adapters. With both drivers installed, contention for the SMBUS controller occurs
