Details
In order to properly diagnose an Windows NT Server Hang or Stop condition, it is important to record the information that appears on the screen and forward this information to the technical specialist.

In some cases, the server will hang and reboot before the information that appears can be properly documented.

Sometimes this reboot can be avoided by changing a Windows NT Startup/Shutdown Parameter (Automatically reboot.)
  1. From the NT desktop, open Control Panel.
  2. Choose System .
  3. Select the Startup/Shutdown tab .
  4. Unclick Automatically reboot box.

Note : Automatic reboot is enabled by default when you install Windows NT. Reboot the system. The next time the blue screen stop message occurs, the server should not reboot. If the server continues to reboot after the blue screen and the OS automatic reboot has been disabled, then this can be caused by the Service Processor OS watchdog timer.

Netfinity servers are fitted with Advanced Management Service Processor Hardware. One of the functions of this hardware is to continually communicate with the OS to ensure the OS is running (this task is called the OS heartbeat.) The Service Processor can be configured such that if it detects a failure in this heartbeat, it will initiate a system reboot. The default setting for this feature is disabled. If this feature is not disabled and the Service Processor Driver software is installed, then the occurrence of some blue screen hangs will cause the Service Processor Hardware to reboot the system.

To examine the configuration of the Service Processor Hardware, click here to download the Advanced System Management Utilities Diskette. The file is a self-extracting executable file that creates a diskette.
Boot the server with this diskette and from the start screen choose Configuration Settings . From the Configuration Settings menu choose General Settings . On this screen the default setting for the Timeouts should be as following words:

  • Post timeout - 0 disabled
  • Loader timeout - 0 disabled
  • O/S timeout - 0 disabled

If any of the three timeouts are not set to 0 disabled then change the values to 0 disabled and press F6 to apply the settings.

Note : Power off delay default setting on the same screen is 30 seconds. Exit the utility and restart the server. The next time the blue screen stop occurs, the server should not reboot.
