Problem

RETAIN tip H201069: A Microsoft Windows NT operating system error message appears at startup time stating that at least one service had an error. The Windows NT event log will show the following message: "The PCnet DMI service depends on the following non-existent service: WIN32SL"

Symptom

A Microsoft Windows NT operating system error message appears at startup time stating that at least one service had an error. The Windows NT event log will show the following message:

"The PCnet DMI service depends on the following non-existent service: WIN32SL"

Affected configurations

The system is any model of the following IBM xSeries server:

  • xSeries 240, type 8664
The system is any of the following IBM Netfinity servers:
  • Netfinity 5600 server, type 8664, any model
  • Netfinity 5500-M20 server, type 8662, any model
  • Netfinity 5500-M10 server, type 8661, any model
  • Netfinity 5500 server, type 8660, any model
  • Netfinity 5100 server, type 8656, any model
  • Netfinity 5000 server, type 8659, any model

The system is any of the following IBM PC Servers:

  • PC Server 330, type 8640, any model
  • PC Server 325, type 8639, any model
T he system is configured with any number of processors.

The behavior will occur on any system configured with an IBM Netfinity 10/100 Fault Tolerant Adapter, Option part number 08L3341, replacement part number (FRU) 25L4837 or 31L4180.

The system's diagnostics pass.

Microsoft Windows NT version 4.0 with any Service Pack applied is affected.

The AMD Device Driver for the IBM Netfinity 10/100 Fault Tolerant Adapter is affected.


Solution

The problem is fixed in version 4.12 of the AMD device driver. This driver will be available from the 2.08 diskette (or later) image. Check the IBM 10/100 Fault Tolerant Adapter Device Driver Diskette link for version 2.08, or later.

The corresponding text file is viewable on-line and may be printed.

The downloaded file is a self-extracting executable file that will prompt for a diskette. To create the update diskette, follow the instructions on the display.


Workaround

To prevent the warning messages, change the startup mode of the PCNET service from "automatic" to "manual". This can be done by selecting Control Panel > Services > the PCNET service, and pressing the "Startup....." button and making the appropriate change.

Note: The warning message can also be prevented by installing the Windows DMI service layer.

Additional information

In Windows NT, the startup mode of the AMD adapter's DMI service (PCNET) defaults to automatic.

The PCNET service will try to register with the Windows operating system DMI service layer code. If the Windows DMI service layer code is not loaded on the machine, this will result in a warning message and an entry in the Windows NT Event Viewer.

This will not cause any operational problems as the PCNET service is not required for normal adapter operation. The PCNET service is used for Hot Swap operations.

Note: This problem only occurs with version 4.10 of the Windows NT driver.
