Troubleshooting

Problem

Resolving The Problem

Symptom

Windows 95 hangs and displays a GPF error 0E at address 0157:BFF9A25B when the Remote Control feature of Microsoft System Management Server (SMS) is utilized. This hang will occur in Windows 95 OSR1 and OSR2.

Affected configurations

The above symptom may occur on the following systems:
  • IBM IntelliStation E Pro, type 6893, all models
The above system is installed with Windows 95, Microsoft SMS using the Remote Feature, and a Matrox G200 video adapter card. When the Remote Feature of Microsoft SMS is accessed, the system displays a GPF error0E at address 0157:BFF9A25B and the system hangs. The error is as a result of the way the video driver and SMS interact.

Additional information

SMS installs hooks in the display driver. These hooks are JMP opcodes that point into the SMS code. The problem is that the opcodes are 16-bit and the Matrox display driver is 32-bit. Therefore, invalid opcodes are created.

Solution

Update the Matrox video driver to the latest level.
Click on Matrox video driver to obtain this file.
