Abstract
Netfinity 5000: Windows NT installation fails, system halted
Symptom
The installation of Windows NT fails when the Fibre Channel Host Bus adapter is installed on bus-1 with another PCI card installed on the same bus (slots 1-4).
NOTE: This problem is not seen when the Fibre Channel Host Bus Adapter is on bus-0, slot5.
The installation of Windows NT fails during the blue screen of Windows NT with the following message:
"Call your Hardware Vendor, system Halted"
NOTE: This is after mass storage devices are loaded and the system reboots.
Affected configurations
- The system is a Netfinity 5000 server, Type 8659, any model.
- The system is configured with the Fibre Channel Host Bus adapter in bus-1 slots 1, 2, 3 or 4.
- The system is configured with more than one PCI adapter on Bus-1, slots1-4.
- The system fails during the installation of Windows NT with the following error message:
"Call your Hardware Vendor, system Halted"
Solution
Two possible fixes:
- Press F6 during the "Setup is inspecting your computer's hardware..." message. Load driver(s) for Fibre Channel Host Bus adapter at this time.
NOTE: If this fails, use second fix (below).
- Install Fibre Channel Host Bus Adapter Card and driver after Windows NT has been completely installed.
Details
A number of drivers are loaded by default in order to be able to install from the CD without special driver diskettes. These drivers ask Windows NT for specific resources, and if no other driver has claimed them, will attempt their private detection methods. These drivers are ones that are submitted to Microsoft for inclusion on the CD. If the driver is loaded, it will claim its addresses. These private detection methods may try to talk to areas they do not own in incompatible ways.
