The following procedure may be helpful in troubleshooting intermittent Windows 95 hangs on startup.

Resolving The Problem

The following procedure may be helpful in troubleshooting intermittent Windows 95 hangs on startup. Using the Bootlog.txt option on F8 interactive startup is only helpful if you know Windows 95 is going to hang on every startup. The option to record a Bootlog.txt file must be active for it to record the offending driver. If the hangs are intermittent, the following procedure can be used to cause a Bootlog.txt file created on every boot. By examining the bootlog file after the hang situation occurs as described below, you will be able to identify the specific driver causing the problem.

At a MSDOS prompt:
From the C: drive change to the root directory - CD \

type:  attrib msdos.sys -s -h -r
copy msdos.sys msdos.old
edit msdos.sys

in the "Options" section add the following below existing Boot Options:

BootMenu=1
BootMenuDefault=2
BootMenuDelay=2

Save the file and exit the editor.

type:  attrib msdos.sys +s +h +r

You are now setup to create a hidden BOOTLOG.TXT file in the C:\ directory on every boot.

The next boot renames the previous BOOTLOG.TX to BOOTLOG.PRV

The drivers loaded will be listed. If the unit locks up, reboot and bottom BOOTLOG.PRV file will show the last driver that attempted to load, but will not state 'LoadSuccess'.
