Summary

Gathering a Process Monitor trace.

Objective

Process Monitor is a utility from Microsoft System Internals for gathering vital information for debugging various issues on the Windows OS.

Environment

Windows based systems.

Steps

The following is for gathering a basic Process Monitor trace capture:
Obtain ProcMon from Microsoft, it's available at the following link:
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/procmon
  • Extract the contents of the zip file to a folder of your choice.
     
  • Run the ProcMon.exe
    • First time run you will need to accept licensing.
       
  • You may be prompted with filter rules, just press OK, take all the defaults.
     
  • Upon start of ProcMon it will start collecting data.
     
  • Until your ready to collect the issue, stop and clear ProcMon data collection.
    • CTRL+E toggles data collection off/on.
    • CTRL+X clears the data collection.
       
  • To collect data:
     
    • Start ProcMon data collection.
    • Recreate the issue.
    • Stop ProcMon data collection.
    • CTRL+S to save, just take defaults. 
       
  • Take note of the save path and send in the resulting .pml file to you support representative.

IBM does not own or maintain Process Monitor, but will use it to gather useful information related to our software running in a Windows environment.
