Supported servers: IBM® Flex System® x222 Compute Node (Type 7916)
Follow the instructions in this document in sequential order unless these instructions advise you otherwise. Windows and messages might differ from those in this document. Throughout this document, the term select is used to denote the use of arrow keys, the Tab key, Alt + a letter combination, or the mouse to make a selection.
References to optional hardware in this document do not imply support of that hardware. For information about supported options, see the ServerProven® information for your server at http://www.ibm.com/systems/info/x86servers/serverproven/compat/us.
1.0 What you will need
You must have the following software and hardware for the installation:
- A licensed copy of Microsoft Windows Server 2008 x64 with Service Pack 2
- An external DVD reader device
- Supported hard disk drives. See http://www.ibm.com/systems/info/x86servers/serverproven/compat/us/ for the ServerProven list of supported options and part numbers for the server.
2.0 Where to download firmware, device drivers and files
You can download firmware, device drivers and files from the following sites:

3.0 Preparing the hardware
To prepare the hardware, update system firmware, and configure arrays, see the IBM Flex System® x222 Compute Node (Type 7916) Installation Guide and User's Guide at the IBM Support Portal .4.0 Installing Microsoft Windows Server 2008 x64 with Service Pack 2
To install Windows Server 2008 x64 with Service Pack 2 complete the following steps:- Insert the Windows Server 2008 x64 SP2 DVD into the external DVD drive.
- Turn on the server.
- When you see the message "F12 Select Boot Device", press the F12 key to enter the boot device selection menu.
- Use the arrow keys to select the "CD/DVD Rom" boot option, then press Enter.
- When you are prompted with the message "Press any key to boot from cd or dvd", press any key to start the server from the Windows Server 2008 x64 SP2 DVD. The files are copied from the setup DVD. This process takes a few minutes.
- In the Windows Server 2008 window, make the following selections:
- From the Language to install list, select English (or other language preference).
- From the Time and currency format list, select English (United States) (or other time & currency preference).
- From the Keyboard or input method list, select US (or other preference).
- Click Next.
- Click Install Now.
- Select the version of Windows Server 2008 x64 you would like to install.
- Click Next.
- Scroll down and read the license agreement.
- Select I accept the license terms and click Next.
- Select Custom (advanced).
- Insert USB Key with the LSI Adapter, SAS2 2004 Spitfire - StorPort driver and select Load Driver
- Click Browse and then navigate to the driver folder on the Removable Disk (C:) and click OK
- Select the LSI Adapter, SAS2 2004 Spitfire - StorPort and click Next
- When Windows Server 2008 Setup displays all hard disk storage that is available on the server, select one of the following options to choose or create a drive partition in which to install Windows Server 2008:
- Allow Setup to create a partition: To partition the entire hard disk as one primary partition, highlight Disk0 unallocated space for the hard disk drive on which you want to install Windows Server 2008, and click Next.
- Create a partition: To create a partition, highlight Disk0 unallocated space for the hard disk drive on which you want to install Windows Server 2008, and click Drive options; then, click New. You are prompted to indicate how much available space to allocate from the non-partitioned drive. Type the amount of space (in MB), and click Apply; then, click Next.
- Delete a partition: Use this option to delete a previous partition prior to creating a partition using either method above.
- Setup formats the selected partition and copies the applicable files to the drive partition. This process takes several minutes and restarts the system several times.
- After Windows Server 2008 x64 completes, you are prompted to change the administrator password before you can log on.
- After you log on as the administrator, the Initial Configuration Tasks window starts. Follow these steps for activate Windows (you will need your product ID), naming your system, networking setup and other basic setup tasks.
- NOTE: Before networking can be setup you will need to install drivers for the onboard network device. See section 4.1 Updating firmware and device drivers for instructions on obtaining the latest driver for this device.
- NOTE: It is recommended that the latest drivers for chipset, video, network and hard disk controller be installed for best system performance. See section 4.1 Updating firmware and device drivers.
- Use the Microsoft Server 2008 Server Manager MMC, Roles and Features to set up the server for your specific needs.
To make sure that the latest device drivers and firmware for the IBM® FLEX SYSTEM® x222 COMPUTE NODE (Type 7916) unit are installed, follow the instructions in the README (.txt) file that is included with the device driver. To download the device driver and firmware packages and the installation instructions for IBM® FLEX SYSTEM® x222 COMPUTE NODE (Type 7916), complete the following steps:
- Go to http://www.ibm.com/support and the IBM Support Portal will automatically open.
- Select Browse for a product
- Under Hardware expand PureSystems
- Under PureSystems expand PureFlex System
- Under PureFlex System expand Compute Node
- Under Compute Node expand x220 Compute Node and select your specific model type
- Click on the double arrow button to add your system to the My products list section and click on Finish
- In the Flashes and alerts box click on More to get the complete list of firmware and device drivers for your system. Follow the Readme.txt file in each download package for installation instructions.
To enable Hyper-V under Windows Server 2008 x64 SP2 complete the following steps:
- Start Server Manager console
- In the Roles Summary area of Server Manager main window, click Add Roles.
- On the Select Server Roles page, select Hyper-V.
- Close Server Manager, and allow system to reboot.

If connecting the V7000 storage controller with multiple connections the MPIO device specific module needs to be installed. This is only needed if there multiple connections to the V7000 storage system. This can be downloaded from the following location http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=ssg1S4000350
4.4 Installing IBM System Director Agents
If integrating the IBM Flex System x220 Compute Node with the Flex System Manager the IBM System Director agents need to be loaded. This can be downloaded from the following location http://www-03.ibm.com/systems/software/director/downloads/agents.html
4.5 Post-installation instructions
- Install the latest drivers and firmware (see section 4.1).
- Microsoft updates should be run after all roles and features are enabled to update the system with all the current hotfixes.
- If your system is running Hyper-V it is recommended to install the following hotfix: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2263829
- IBM recommends you review all Retain Tips related to this system and the Operating System you are installing. Retain Tips are found at http://www.ibm.com/support/us/en. Review the "Problem Resolution" section for your specific machine type/model.
