Follow the network operating system (NOS) installation instructions provided in this document in sequential order unless these instructions advise you otherwise. Windows and messages might differ from those in this document. Throughout this document, the term select is used to denote the use of arrow keys, the tab key, or Alt + a letter combination to make a selection from a menu or to denote the use of a mouse to choose an option from a drop down menu . The term click is used to denote the use of a mouse to make a selection.

1.0 What you will need

You must have the following software and hardware for the installation:

  • A licensed copy of Microsoft Windows 2008 R2 with Service Pack 1 Slipstream.
  • Depending on the chassis type, an external DVD reader device.
  • Supported hard disk drives. Go to http://www-03.ibm.com/servers/eserver/serverproven/compat/us/ for the ServerProven list of supported options and part numbers for the server.

2.0 Where to download device drivers and files

You can download device drivers and files from the following sites:

3.0 Installation instructions for Windows Server 2008 R2 with Service Pack 1

To install Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (SP1) complete the following steps:
  1. Insert the Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 DVD into the BladeCenter DVD drive.  Note:  If your blade chassis does not have a DVD drive then an external DVD drive will be required.
  2. Press the media tray button on the front of the blade server to make sure that the blade server is associated with the DVD drive.
  3. Press the video select button on the front of the blade server to make sure that the blade server is associated with the keyboard/video/mouse (KVM).
  4. Turn on the blade server.
  5. When you are prompted with the message "Press any key to boot from cd or dvd", press any key to start the server from the Windows Server 2008 R2 Setup DVD. The files are copied from the setup DVD. This process takes a few minutes.
  6. In the Windows Server 2008 R2 window, make the following selections:
    • From the Language to install list, select English (or other language preference).
    • From the Time and currency format list, select English (United States) (or other time & currency preference).
    • From the Keyboard or input method list, select US (or other preference).
  7. Click Next.
  8. Click Install Now.
  9. Select the version of Windows Server 2008 R2 you would like to install.
  10. Click Next
  11. Scroll down and read the license agreement.  
  12. Select I accept the license terms and click Next.
  13. Select Custom (advanced).
  14. Go to step 15 if there is no warning message about the disk, otherwise see A or B below:
        A.  If you see a warning message about the disk and the disk shown as "Offline",  follow these steps:
  •  If a new volume has been created, the “Unallocated Space” shown on Disk0 as “Offline.”
  •  Notice a warning message in the bottom left stating: “Windows cannot be installed on this disk! (Show Details)”
  •  Click on the error message. Windows suggests it could mark the disk as Online. Click OK to do so.
  •  Windows marks the disk as Online, but the warning still exists.
  •  If the user clicks again on the warning message the additional details say: “Windows cannot be installed to this disk. This computer’s hardware may not support booting  to this disk. Ensure that the disk’s controller is enabled in the computer’s uEFI  menu.”
  •  That message is erroneous and can be ignored.
  •  Continue on to step 15.
        B.  If you see a warning message about the disk,  follow these steps:
  •  Notice a warning message in the bottom left stating: “Windows cannot be installed on this disk! (Show Details)”
  •  Click on the error message. “Windows cannot be installed to this disk. This computer’s hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure that the disk’s controller  is enabled in the computer’s uEFI menu.”
  •  That message is erroneous and can be ignored.
  •  Continue on to step 15.
  1. When Windows Server 2008 R2 Setup displays all hard disk storage that is available on the server, select one of the following options to choose or create a drive partition in which to install Windows Server 2008 R2:
  • Allow Setup to create a partition: To partition the entire hard disk as one primary partition, highlight Disk0 unallocated space for the hard disk drive on which you want to install Windows Server 2008 R2, and click Next.
  • Create a partition: To create a partition, highlight Disk0 unallocated space for the hard disk drive on which you want to install Windows Server 2008 R2, and click Drive options; then, click New. You are prompted to indicate how much available space to allocate from the non-partitioned drive. Type the amount of space (in MB), and click Apply; then, click Next.
  • Delete a partition:  Use this option to delete a previous partition prior to creating a partition using either method above.
  1. Setup formats the selected partition and copies the applicable files to the drive partition. This process takes several minutes. When the installation is complete, the server restarts automatically.
  2. After Windows Server 2008 R2 restarts, you are prompted to change the administrator password before you can log on.  After you log on as the administrator, a configuration wizard window starts. Use the wizard for naming and basic networking setup.
  3. Use the Microsoft Server 2008 R2 Roles and Features functions to set up the server for your specific needs.
  4. Use the product key supplied with Windows Server 2008 R2 to activate your installation.

4.0 Post-installation instructions

NOTE:

  • IBM recommends you review all Retain Tips related to this system and the Operating System you are installing. Retain Tips are found at http://www.ibm.com/support/us/en.  Review the "Problem Resolution" section for your specific machine type/model.
4.1 Updating firmware & device drivers

To make sure that the latest device drivers and firmware for the BladeCenter unit and blade servers are installed, follow the instructions in the README (.txt) file that is included with the device driver.  To download the device driver and firmware packages and the installation instructions for BladeCenter HS23E, complete the following steps:

  1. Go to http://www.ibm.com/support/
  2. Go to Downloads tab and click on Fix Central.
  3. Choose Systems in the Product Group drop down list.  In the Select from Systems, select BladeCenter.
  4. Next select BladeCenter HS23E under Select from BladeCenter.
  5. Choose your model type 8038 or 8039 from Select from BladeCenter HS23E
  6. Click on Select OS and then select Windows Server 2008 R2
  7. Click on Continue and all the supported firmwares and drivers are in there to download.
