3.0 Preparing the hardware

To prepare the hardware, update system firmware, and configure arrays, see the IBM BladeCenter® HX5 (Type 7872) Installation Guide at the IBM support Web site.

If the server has an LSI SAS controller, make the following configuration changes:

  • Set "Legacy Only" as the first item in the boot order.
  • Use the LSI controller setup program to specify which drive or array is the boot disk.

4.0 Getting Started with VMware ESXi Server 4.0 Update 1 Installable

To install VMware ESXi Server 4.0 Update 1 Installable, complete the following steps:

  1. Follow the detailed instructions for installing VMware ESXi in the ESXi Installable and vCenter Server Setup Guide.
  2. Update the Broadcom Ethernet controller device driver, using the VMware ESX/ESXi 4.0 Driver CD for Broadcom NetXtreme II BCM5706, BCM5708, BCM5709, BCM5716 Ethernet Controllers.
  3. Apply patch ESX400-201002001, which is available from the VMware Knowledge Base .
