1.0 What you will need

You must have the following software and hardware for the installation:

• A registered copy of VMware ESXi Server 3.5 Update 5 Installable.
• Supported hard disk drives. See http://www.ibm.com/servers/eserver/serverproven/compat/us/ for the ServerProven list of supported options and part numbers for the blade server.

3.0 Preparing the hardware

To prepare the hardware, update system firmware, and configure arrays, see the IBM BladeCenter HS22V (Type 7871, 1949) Installation and User's Guide at the IBM support Web site.

When you install a legacy operating system such as VMware ESX or ESXi onto a UEFI-based blade server, there are two configuration changes that are considered best practices. In the case of ESX Classic, no problematic symptoms have been observed if these changes are not made; however, in the case of ESXi, you must make the following configuration changes:

• Move the Legacy Only flag to the top of the boot order list.
• Use the setup program for the integrated LSI controller to specify which drive or array is the boot disk.
