Supported servers: IBM® System x3650 M3 (Type 4255, 7945)
Follow the instructions in this document in sequential order unless these instructions advise you otherwise. Windows and messages might differ from those in this document. Throughout this document, the term select is used to denote the use of arrow keys, the Tab key, Alt + a letter combination, or the mouse to make a selection.
References to optional hardware in this document do not imply support of that hardware. For information about supported options, see the ServerProven® information for your server at http://www.ibm.com/systems/info/x86servers/serverproven/compat/us/.
1.0 What you will need
You must have the following software and hardware for the installation:
- A registered copy of SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11.
- Supported hard disk drives. See http://www.ibm.com/systems/info/x86servers/serverproven/compat/us/ for the ServerProven list of supported options and part numbers for the server.
2.0 Where to download device drivers and files
You can download device drivers and files from the following sites:
- SUSE Linux® Web site: http://www.novell.com/linux/
- IBM U.S. Support Web site: http://www.ibm.com/systems/support/
- IBM Fix Central download site: System x3650 M3, 7945 (SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11)
- For countries outside the U.S., start at http://www.ibm.com/.
You can download product specifications from the following site:
- For IBM System x® product specifications, go to http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/redbooks.nsf/portals/systemx?Open.
3.0 Preparing the hardware
To prepare the hardware, update system firmware, and configure arrays, see the IBM System x3650 M3 (Type 4255, 7945) Installation Guide at the IBM support Web site.
4.0 Installing SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11
The procedure for installing SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 (SLES11) to an iSCSI device is not significantly different from the procedure for installing SLES10. If you are configuring a software iSCSI target for installation of SLES11, follow the detailed instructions in the iSCSI Configuration Manager document and the iSCSI BladeBoot SUSE Linux Enterprise Server Setup Guide.
To install SLES11, complete the following steps:
- Complete one of the following procedures:
- If the server has a CD/DVD drive, insert the SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 DVD into the CD/DVD drive and restart the server.
- If the server does not have a CD/DVD drive, perform the installation from a network installation server that contains an image of SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11. For details, see the "Remote Installation" section in the SLES 11 Deployment Guide.
- If you are using a ServeRAID M1015 SAS controller, press F6, select Yes, and then press Enter.
- Select Installation and press Enter to load the kernel.
- If you are using a ServeRAID M1015 SAS controller, complete the
following steps:
- Go to the IBM support Web site and download the IBM ServeRAID M Series and MR10 Series SAS controller driver for SLES 11.
- Follow the instructions that come with the device driver to create a device-driver update diskette.
- When you are prompted, insert the update diskette into the diskette drive, and then select Yes.
- Select the location of the diskette (usually /dev/fd0 for an IDE diskette drive or /dev/sda for a USB diskette drive), and then select OK.
- Select Back to continue with the installation.
- Follow the detailed instructions in the SLES 11 Deployment Guide to install SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11.
- After installation, the mga device driver is used for the
graphical X environment and displays some unwanted visual artifacts
under certain conditions. To avoid this problem, edit
/etc/X11/xorg.conf and change
Driver "mga"
toDriver "vesa"
Then, restart the graphical X environment. Alternatively, you can update the X11 video device drivers to version xorg-x11-driver-video-7.4-39.9.2 or later, which contains an updated mga device driver.
For advanced installation topics, such as how to configure a network installation server, an unattended installation, or a system for a XEN environment, see the documentation that comes with the operating system or see the SUSE Linux online documentation.
