4.0 Detailed installation instructions
4.1 Installing Red Hat Enterprise Linux Version 5 Update 3
To install Red Hat Enterprise Linux Version 5 Update 3, complete the following steps:
- If your system has a CD/DVD Drive, insert the Red Hat Enterprise Linux Version 5 Update 3 CD 1 into the CD drive and boot the system.
- If your system doesn't have a CD/DVD drive, then you must perform a network installation. Thus, make sure your PXE server is setup and an image of Red Hat Enterprise Linux Version 5 Update 3 on it. Please see the Red Hat System Administration Guide at https://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/enterprise/ for details.
- Follow the detailed instruction from the Red Hat Linux Installation Guide, located at http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/enterprise/RHEL-5-manual/index.html, to install Red Hat Enterprise Linux Version 5 Update 3.
-
In the Disk Partitioning window,
- If you want to configure a software iSCSI target for installation, select Advanced storage configuration to set up your partitions.
- Select Review and modify partitioning layout checkbox.
- To obtain the best security and performance from the server, apply all current software upgrades and security patches. Refer to the Red Hat Network Manual in the Documentation section of the Red Hat Support Web pages for information about how to do this.
4.2 Installing the kernel source
If needed, use the following instructions to install the full kernel source tree after installing the operating system.
- Obtain the kernel src.rpm from the applicable source CD or from Red Hat Network.
-
Install the src.rpm using RPM. For example:
rpm -Uvh kernel-<version>.src.rpm
-
Change to the SPECS directory:
cd /usr/src/redhat/SPECS
-
Run rpmbuild:
rpmbuild -bp kernel-<version>.spec --target <arch>
(where <arch> is the architecture that you are running)
Using the above example, the source tree is located under
/usr/src/redhat/BUILD/kernel-<version>/linux-<version>
