Supported Server: IBM® System x3755 (Type 8877, 7163)

Follow the instructions in this document in sequential order unless these instructions advise you otherwise. Windows and messages might differ from those in this document. Throughout this document, the term select is used to denote the use of arrow keys, the Tab key, or Alt + a letter combination to make a selection.

You must have the following software and hardware for the installation:

• A licensed copy of Microsoft® Windows® Server 2003 Edition.
• Supported hard disk drives. Go to ServerProven for a list of supported options and part numbers for the server.
• The IBM ServeRAID 8.30 (or later) Support CD.
• A USB diskette drive.
• An Adaptec SAS ServeRAID-8k device driver diskette. (To create the diskette, see 3.1 Creating an Adaptec SAS ServeRAID-8k device driver diskette.)

To install the Windows Server 2003 Edition, you must first create an Adaptec SAS ServeRAID-8k device driver diskette. Complete the steps in the following sections.

To create the Adaptec SAS ServeRAID-8k device driver diskette, complete the following steps:

1. From an Internet-connected system with a diskette drive, go to: ServeRAID controller matrix, then under ServeRAID controller support, select the file link for accessing the SAS/SATA ServeRAID-8k device driver.
2. Under Drivers by Operating Systems, select Microsoft Windows 2000 and 2003 link; then, select the IBM ServeRAID support diskette for Microsoft Windows 2003 executable file link.
3. When the Terms and Conditions window is displayed, select one of the following options:
   1. If you select I agree and the Use Download Director is checked (the default), the .exe file is saved to a location that you specify. When you are prompted to launch the file, select Yes; then, go to step 3.
   2. If you clear the Use Download Director check box, and select I agree, the File Download window is displayed. Select Save. The .exe file is saved to a local directory. Double-click the .exe file to run it.
4. When prompted, read the license agreement, select I accept the terms in the license agreement and select Next.
5. Insert a blank, formatted diskette, and select Next. The device driver files are then extracted to the diskette.
6. When prompted, select Finish.

Note:

It is recommended that you update the ServeRAID controller firmware to the same version as the device driver before you install the operating system. You can also download the firmware diskettes from the same Web site that is listed in step 1.

To install Windows Server 2003 Edition, complete the following steps:

1. Connect a USB diskette drive to the server.
2. Turn on the server and insert the Windows Server 2003 Edition Setup CD into the CD or DVD drive. When the message prompt, Press any key to boot from cd is displayed, press any key.
3. When the message prompt, Press F6 if you need to install a third party SCSI or RAID driver is displayed, press F6. Windows Server 2003 Setup copies the files from the setup CD. This process takes a few minutes.
4. When you are prompted to manually specify a controller, select S to specify additional devices.
5. When you are prompted for the manufacturer-supplied hardware support diskette, insert the Adaptec SAS ServeRAID-8k device driver diskette and press Enter.
6. When Adaptec SAS RAID Controller driver is displayed, press Enter.
7. After the files are copied from the diskette, press Enter. The files are copied from the setup CD. This process takes several minutes.
8. When you are prompted to install Windows Server 2003 Edition, press Enter.
9. When the license agreement is displayed, read the license agreement and press F8 if you agree to the terms and conditions.
10. When Windows Server 2003 Setup displays all of the hard disk storage that is available on the server, select one of the following options to choose or create a drive partition in which to install Windows Server 2003:
    • Allow Setup to create a partition: To partition the entire hard disk as one primary partition, highlight Non-partitioned space for the hard disk drive on which you want to install Windows Server 2003 and press Enter.
    • Create a partition: To create a partition, highlight Non-partitioned space for the hard disk drive on which you want to install Windows Server 2003 and press C. You are prompted to indicate how much available space to allocate from the non-partitioned drive. Type the amount of space (in MB) and press Enter.
    • Delete a partition.
11. When you are prompted to select a file system, select NTFS file system.

    Notes:

    1. Setup formats the selected partition and copies the applicable files to the drive partition. This process takes several minutes.
    2. The server restarts to the graphical portion of Setup where Setup continues with the installation of Windows Server 2003. During this process, Setup automatically installs and configures the devices in the server. This process takes several minutes.
       
       
12. Change the regional settings if you are not installing the server in the U.S.; then, select Next.
    
    

    Note:

    To modify the regional settings after installing Windows Server 2003, select Control Panel; then, select Regional Options.
    
    

13. In the Personalize Your Software window, when you are prompted for your name and organization, type your name in the Name field and type your organization in the Organization field. The names that you type are used as default server names. Applications that you install later use this information for the product registration and document identification. Select Next.
14. When you are prompted for the Windows Server 2003 Setup CD-Key, type the Windows Server 2003 Setup CD-Key in the applicable fields. Select Next. (Setup uses the organization name that was entered previously, as a suggested name for the server.)
15. In the Licensing Modes window, select the applicable licensing mode for your organization; then, select Next.
16. In the Name and Administrator Password window, when you are prompted for an administrator password and server name, type the server name and password and select Next. (Setup uses the organization name that was entered previously as a suggested name for the server.)

    Note: Passwords are case sensitive. Be sure to use a combination of uppercase and lowercase letters with at least one number for your password.

17. In the Time Zone window, set the current time. To change the date, select the button to the right of the date. To change the time, highlight the value that you want to change and enter the new values using the keyboard or the Up Arrow and Down Arrow keys; then, select Next.

    Note: Windows Server 2003 services perform many tasks that are dependent on the accuracy of the time and date settings of the server. Be sure to select the correct time zone for the server location to avoid problems.

18. In the Networking Settings window, select Typical or Custom settings. If you are prompted, type the applicable network information. Select Next to install Windows networking components.
    
    
19. In the Workgroup or Computer Domain window, select one of the following options:
    • No, this computer is not on a network, it is a network without a domain.
    • Yes, make this computer a member of the following domain.

    Type the workgroup or domain name in the applicable field and select Next.

    The remaining operating-system components are installed and configured according to the options that you specified. The display in the left column shows the amount of time remaining until the Windows Server 2003 installation is completed. This process might take several minutes.

    When Windows Server 2003 Setup has completed installation, the server automatically restarts.

20. After Windows Server 2003 starts, press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to log on.
21. When the desktop is displayed, the Windows Server Post-Setup Security Updates wizard begins. If this server is connected to the Internet, this wizard helps you download software security updates and configure the system to retrieve updates automatically.
22. After closing the Security Updates wizard, the Manage Your Server wizard launches automatically. This wizard helps you to add and configure additional roles for the server, such as File Server, DHCP Server, Active Directory, and DNS. For more information, select Read about server roles in the wizard.

    Note: You can skip this step and launch the wizard later by clicking Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Configure Your Server Wizard.

To install the device drivers and to identify hardware that is not functioning, you must open Device Manager. In Device Manager, non-functioning devices are usually listed under Other Devices and are indicated by a yellow exclamation point. To open Device Manager, complete the following steps:

1. Select Start.
2. Right-click My Computer.
3. Select Manage, then select Device Manager in the left pane.

Use the procedures in the following sections to install the device drivers and to resolve any Unknown device.

Windows Server 2003 includes a device driver for the Broadcom Network Device on the System x3755 server. To install an updated version of the Broadcom NetXtreme II Ethernet device driver, complete the following steps:

1. Go to Software and device drivers.
2. Follow the menus for System x3755 and Type 8877 and 7163 for instructions to download the Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet device driver. This takes a few minutes.
3. Unzip or extract the files to c:\drivers\ethernet. You will need to navigate to this location later.
4. Click the Start icon (in the lower left corner of the window).
5. Select Computer and navigate to c:\drivers\ethernet directory.
6. Double-click the Launch.exe file to execute it.
7. Click Continue and then click Next.
8. Click Finish to complete the installation process.

To configure the network, select Start -> Control Panel -> Network Connections; then select New Connection Wizard to set up the network connection.

To configure network protocols, right-click Local Area Connection in the Network connections window; then, select Properties.

To join a domain, select Start -> Control Panel -> System, select the Computer Name tab, and then select Change.

To install the ATI RN50/ES1000 video device driver, complete the following steps:

1. Go to Software and device drivers.
2. Follow the menus for System x3755 and Type 8877 and 7163 for instructions to download the ATI custom video driver for Microsoft Windows Server 2003. This takes few minutes.
3. Unzip or extract the files to c:\drivers\video. You will need to navigate to this location later.
4. Click the Start icon (in the lower left corner of the window).
5. Select Computer and navigate to c:\drivers\video directory.
6. Double-click the Setup.exe file to execute it.
7. In the Welcome window, select Next.
8. In the License Agreement window, read the license agreement and select Yes.
9. Select Express.
10. Select No, I will restart my computer later; then, select Finish.
