To install Sun Solaris 10 Operating System 8/07, complete the steps in the following section.

4.1 Installing Sun Solaris 10 Operating System 8/07

To install Sun Solaris 10 Operating System 8/07, complete the following steps:

  1. Disable "Planar Ethernet" (Broadcom 5709c) and "Planar Ethernet PXE/DHCP". Support for this interface is not available for Solaris 10 8/07 and Solaris 10 5/08. Use the BIOS Configuraton/Setup Utility to disable the Planar Ethernet:
    1. Turn on the server.
    2. When the message "Press F1 for Setup" is displayed, press F1.
    3. Select Devices and I/O Ports.
    4. Select Planar Ethernet and disable this device.
    5. Exit "Devices and I/O Ports."
    6. Select Start Options.
    7. Select Planar Ethernet PXE/DHCP and disable this option.
    8. Exit the Setup utility.
    9. Select [Yes, save and exit the setup utility].
  2. Insert the Solaris 10 Software 1 for x86 Platforms CD into the CD drive and boot the system.
  3. Add the ITU for the LSI Mega SAS driver (version 1.17) at OS install time. You must enter Ctrl-C after adding the ITU to return to the previous menu.
    Note:
For Solaris 10 8/07, you will need to use a CD/DVD based ITU.
  4. Do not select a graphical install. This may leave the monitor in an unviewable mode to continue with the installation.
  5. Follow the detailed instructions from the Sun Microsystems Documentation located at http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/820-0176?l=en to install Sun Solaris 10 Operating System 8/07.
  6. Install patch 128397-02 (Broadcom NetXtreme II 5708S driver) after Sun Solaris 10 Operating System 8/07 installation.
  7. Create a custom xorg.conf file:
    # eeprom console=text

    # reboot

    # /usr/X11/bin/Xorg -configure

    # vi /xorg.conf.new

    1. Add the following section:
      Section "ServerFlags"

      Option "PciForceConfig1" "true"

      EndSection

    2. Modify the "Device" section as follows:
      Section "Device"

      Identifier "Card0"

      Driver "ati"

      VendorName "ATI Technologies Inc"

      BoardName "ES1000"

      BusID "PCI:1:0:0"

      EndSection

    3. Exit editor and type the following commands:
      # mv /xorg.conf.new /etc/X11/xorg.conf

      # svcadm restart svc:/application/graphical-login/cde-login:default

  8. To obtain the best security and performance from the server, apply all current software upgrades and security patches. These are available from the Sun Solaris Support Web site at http://sunsolve.sun.com/.
