Follow the instructions in this document in sequential order unless these instructions advise you otherwise. Windows and messages might differ from those in this document. Throughout this document, the term select is used to denote the use of arrow keys, the Tab key, Alt + a letter combination, or the mouse to make a selection.

References to optional hardware in this document do not imply support of that hardware. For information about supported options, see the ServerProven® information for your server at http://www-03.ibm.com/servers/eserver/serverproven/compat/us/.

1.0 What you will need

You must have the following software and hardware for the installation:

  • A registered copy of Sun Solaris 10 Operating System 8/07.
  • Supported hard disk drives. Go to http://www-03.ibm.com/servers/eserver/serverproven/compat/us/ for the ServerProven list of supported options and part numbers for the blade server.
  • One blank diskette to create a BIOS code update diskette. You might need additional blank diskettes for firmware updates.
  • If you are using an IBM ServeRAID™ adapter, you need the IBM ServeRAID Support CD.

3.0 Preparing the hardware

To prepare the hardware, update system firmware, and configure arrays, refer to the Installation Guide located at the IBM Support Web site at http://www.ibm.com/systems/support/.

4.0 Detailed installation instructions

4.1 Installing Sun Solaris 10 Operating System 8/07

To install Sun Solaris 10 Operating System 8/07, complete the following steps:

  1. Insert the Solaris 10 Software 1 for x86 Platforms CD into the CD drive and start the system.
  2. Do not select a graphical install. This selection might leave the monitor in an unviewable mode to continue with the installation.
  3. Follow the detailed instruction from the Sun Microsystems Documentation located at http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/819-5455 to install Sun Solaris 10 Operating System 8/07.
  4. At the Pausing window, press Continue to proceed immediately.
  5. At the next Pausing window, press Continue to proceed immediately. This will cause the system to reboot.
  6. At this point, your installation is complete. Log into the system, and select Options -> Sessions -> Common Desktop Environment (CDE).
  7. To obtain the best security and performance from the server, apply all current software upgrades and security patches. These are available from the Sun Solaris Support Web site located at http://sunsolve.sun.com/.
