Supported systems: IBM® System x3350 Types 4192 and 4193

Follow the network operating system (NOS) installation instructions provided in this document in sequential order unless these instructions advise you otherwise. Windows and messages might differ from those in this document. Throughout this document, the term select is used to denote the use of arrow keys, the tab key, or Alt + a letter combination to make a selection from a menu. The term click is used to denote the use of a mouse to make a selection.

1.0 What you will need

You must have the following software and hardware for the installation:

  • A licensed copy of Microsoft® Windows® Server 2008 Edition.
  • Depending on the system type, an external DVD reader might be required.
  • Supported hard disk drives. Go to http://www.ibm.com/servers/eserver/serverproven/compat/us/ for the ServerProven® list of supported options and part numbers for the server.

2.0 Where to download device drivers and files

You can download device drivers and files from the following sites:

3.0 Installation instructions for Microsoft Windows Server 2008 Enterprise Edition

To install Windows Server 2008, complete the steps in the following sections.

3.1 Instructions for manual software installation

To install Microsoft Windows Server 2008 Enterprise Edition, complete the following steps:

  1. Connect the server to a network as required.
  2. Depending on your server, you might need to attach an external DVD reader device.
  3. Turn on the server and insert the Windows Server 2008 Setup DVD into the DVD drive.
  4. When you are prompted with the message Press any key to boot from cd or dvd, press any key. Windows Server 2008 Setup copies the files from the Setup DVD. Windows load the files (this process takes several minutes).
  5. In the Windows Server 2008 window, select the following:
    1. For Language to install, select English.
    2. For Time and currency format, select English (United States).
    3. For Keyboard or input method, select US.
  6. Click Next.
  7. Click Install Now.
  8. Type your product key.
    1. Check the Automatically activate Windows when I'm online check box and click Next..
    2. Scroll down and read the license agreement.
    3. Click I accept the license terms and click Next.
  9. Select Custom (advanced).
  10. When Windows Server 2008 Setup displays all hard disk storage that is available on the server, select one of the following options to choose or create a drive partition in which to install Windows Server 2008:
    • Allow Setup to create a partition: To partition the entire hard disk as one primary partition, highlight Disk0 unallocated space for the hard disk drive on which you want to install Windows Server 2008 and click Next.
    • Create a partition: To create a partition, highlight Disk0 unallocated space for the hard disk drive on which you want to install Windows Server 2008, click Drive options (advanced); then, click New. You are prompted to indicate how much available space to allocate from the nonpartitioned drive. Type the amount of space (in MB), click Apply; then, click Next.
    • Delete a partition.
  11. The server begins installing Microsoft Windows Server 2008 Enterprise Edition:
    1. Copying Windows files.
    2. Expanding files.
    3. Installing features.
    4. Installing updates.
    5. Completing installation.
  12. Setup formats the selected partition and copies the applicable files to the drive partition. This process takes several minutes.

    When Windows Server 2008 Setup has completed installation, the server automatically restarts.

  13. After Windows Server 2008 restarts, you will be prompted to change the administrator password before you can log on.
  14. After you are logged on as the Administrator, a configuration wizard window is displayed. Use the wizard for naming and basic networking setup.
  15. Next, use the Microsoft Server 2008 Roles and Features functions to set up the server to your specific needs.

4.0 Post installation instructions: Installing device drivers

After the Windows Server 2008 installation is complete, install the latest device drivers and firmware for the server. To install the device drivers and to identify hardware that is not functioning, open Device Manager. In Device Manager, non-functioning devices are usually listed under Other Devices and are indicated by a yellow exclamation point. To open Device Manager, complete the following steps:

  1. Click Start.
  2. Right-click My Computer.
  3. Click Manage and select Device Manager in the left pane.

Use the procedures in the following sections to install the device drivers and to resolve any Unknown device.

4.1 Installing the Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet device driver

To install the Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet device driver, complete the following steps:

  1. Go to http://www.ibm.com/systems/support/.
  2. Under Product support, select System x.
  3. Under Product family, select System x3350 from the list.
  4. Select the Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet driver file, and then click the executable file link.
  5. When the Terms and Conditions window is displayed, FTP (Recommended for most users) is selected as the default. Click I agree.
  6. In the File Download window, click Save.
  7. Specify a destination directory where you want to save the files and click Save.
  8. When the download is complete, click Close.
  9. Navigate to the directory where you saved the files and double-click the .exe file.
  10. In the Querying System Windows, under Actions, check Perform Update, click Next, then click Update.
  11. In the Success window, click Exit.

To configure the network, select Start -> Control Panel -> Network Connections. Select the New Connection Wizard to set up the network connection.

To configure network protocols, right-click Local Area Connection in the Network Connections window; then, click Properties.

To join a domain, select Start -> Control Panel -> System. Click the Computer Name tab, and then click Change.

4.2 Installing the ATI video device driver

To install the ATI video device driver, complete the following steps:

  1. Go to http://www.ibm.com/systems/support/.
  2. Under Product support, select System x.
  3. Under Product family, select System x3350 from the list.
  4. Select the ATI Video driver file, and then click the executable file link.
  5. When the Terms and Conditions window is displayed, FTP (Recommended for most users) is selected as the default. Click I agree.
  6. In the File Download window, click Save.
  7. Create destination directory where you want to save the files and click Save.
  8. When the download is complete, click Close.
  9. Navigate to the directory where you saved the files and double-click the .exe file.
  10. In the Querying System Windows, under Actions, check Perform Update, click Next, then click Update.
  11. In the Success window, click Exit.

4.3 Installing the Intel Chipset device driver

To install the Intel chipset device driver for the system board, complete the following steps:

  1. Go to Software and device drivers.
  2. Follow the menus for System x3350 to download the Intel™ Chipset Software Installation Utility and use one of the following procedures:
    • Click Open to run the file from its location on the IBM Web site (preferred).
    • Transfer the file to a local drive and double-click the executable (exe) file to run it.
  3. In the Welcome window, click Next.
  4. In the License Agreement window, click Yes to agree to the terms of the license agreement.
  5. In the Readme information window, click Next.
  6. After the device drivers are installed, click Finish.
  7. Restart the server.

4.4 Installing the SAS device driver

To install the SAS device drivers for the system board, complete the following steps:

  1. Go to Software and device drivers.
  2. Follow the menus for System x3350 to download the specific device driver for the SAS adapter installed.
  3. Click Open to run the file from its location on the IBM Web site (preferred).
  4. Transfer the file to a local drive, and double-click the executable (exe) file to run it.
  5. In the Querying System Windows, select Extract to Hard Drive.
  6. Create a new folder called SAS, then click OK.
  7. In the Extract To HD windows, click Exit.
  8. To update the SAS driver, click Start, right-click My Computer, and select Manage.
  9. Click "+" to the left of Diagnostics to drop down the list, then left-click Device Manager.
  10. Click "+" to the left of Storage Controllers to drop down the list, then right-click the SAS device and select Update Driver Software.
  11. Click Browse my computer for driver software. Browse to the SAS folder where the file was downloaded from IBM Website.
  12. Open win2k3-32 folder and click Open.
  13. Click OK and then Next to install the driver.
  14. When the driver is installed/updated successfully, click Finish.
