Supported systems: IBM® System x3650 (Type 7979)
Follow the network operating system (NOS) installation instructions provided in this document in sequential order unless these instructions advise you otherwise. Windows and messages might differ from those in this document. Throughout this document, the term select is used to denote the use of arrow keys, the tab key, or Alt + a letter combination to make a selection from a menu. The term click is used to denote the use of a mouse to make a selection.
You must have the following software and hardware for the installation:
- A licensed copy of Microsoft® Windows® Server 2008 DataCenter Edition.
- An external DVD reader device might be required. (to create the DVD).
- Supported hard disk drives. Go to http://www.ibm.com/servers/eserver/serverproven/compat/us/ for the ServerProven® list of supported options and part numbers for the server.
You can download device drivers and files from the following sites:

To install Microsoft Windows Server 2008 DataCenter Edition, complete the following steps:
- Connect the server to a network as required.
- Depending on your server, you might need to attach an external DVD reader device.
- Turn on the server and insert the Windows Server 2008 Setup DVD into the DVD drive.
- When you are prompted with the message "press any key to boot from cd or dvd", press any key. Windows Server 2008 Setup copies the files from the Setup DVD. Windows load the files (this process takes several minutes).

In the Windows Server 2008 window, select the following:
- For Language to install, select English.
- For Time and currency format, select English (United States).
- For Keyboard or input method, select US.
- Press Next.
- Click Install Now.

Type your product key.
- Check the Automatically activate Windows when I'm online check-box and click Next..
- Scroll down and read the license agreement.
- Click I accept the license terms and click Next.
- Select Custom (advanced).

When Windows Server 2008 Setup displays all hard disk storage that is available on the server, select one of the following options to choose or create a drive partition in which to install Windows Server 2008:
- Allow Setup to create a partition: To partition the entire hard disk as one primary partition, highlight Disk0 unallocated space for the hard disk drive on which you want to install Windows Server 2008 and press Next.
- Create a partition: To create a partition, highlight Disk0 unallocated space for the hard disk drive on which you want to install Windows Server 2008, click Drive options (advanced); then, click New. You are prompted to indicate how much available space to allocate from the nonpartitioned drive. Type the amount of space (in MB), click Apply; then, press Next.
- Delete a partition.

Setup formats the selected partition and copies the applicable files to the drive partition. This process takes several minutes.
When Windows Server 2008 Setup has completed installation, the server automatically restarts.
- After Windows Server 2008 restarts, you will be prompted to change the administrator password before you can log on.
- After you are logged on as the Administrator, a configuration wizard window is displayed. Use the wizard for naming and basic networking setup.
- Next, use the Microsoft Server 2008 Roles and Features functions to setup the server to your specific needs.
After the installation is complete, make sure that you have the latest device drivers and firmware for the server. To install the device drivers and to identify hardware that is not functioning, open Device Manager. In Device Manager, non-functioning devices are usually listed under Other Devices and are indicated by a yellow exclamation point. To open Device Manager, complete the following steps:
- Click Start.
- Right-click Computer.
- Select Manage and then click Continue; then, select Device Manager in the left pane.
Use the procedures in the following sections to install the device drivers and to resolve any Unknown device.
To install the Intel chipset device driver for the system board, complete the following steps:
- Go to Software and device drivers - IBM System x.

Follow the menus for System x3650 (Type 7979) to download the Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility and use one of the following procedures:
- Click Open to run the file from its location on the IBM Web site (preferred).
- Transfer the file to a local drive and double-click the executable (exe) file to run it.
- In the Welcome window, click Next.
- In the License Agreement window, click Yes to agree to the license agreement.
- In the Readme information window, click Next.
- After the device drivers are installed, click Finish.
- Restart the server.
To install the Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet device driver, complete the following steps:
- Go to Software and device drivers - IBM System x,
- Follow the menus for System x3650 (Type 7979) for instructions to download the Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet device driver. This takes a few minutes.
- Double-click the device driver package, an executable (.exe) file that will open an extraction program.
- In the Welcome window, click Next.
- In the License Agreement window, read the license agreement and click Accept.
- Type c:\drivers\nic for the folder where the files are to be saved, and click Finish. Later, you will need to point to this location when installing the device drivers.
- Click Yes.
- When the message prompt "The package has been delivered successfully" is displayed, click OK.
- Navigate back to the destination directory where you want to install the files and either run Setup.exe or double-click the Launch icon to install the device drivers.
- Refer to the readme file for installation instructions.
- After the device drivers are installed, click Finish.
To configure the network, click Start, click Settings, click Control Panel, then click Network Connections, and then select New Connection Wizard to set up the network connection.
To configure network protocols, right-click Local Area Connection in the Network Connections window; then, click Properties.
To join a domain, click Start, click Settings, click Control Panel, click System, click the Computer Name tab, and then click Change.
To install the ATI video device driver, complete the following steps:
- Go to Software and device drivers - IBM System x.
- Follow the menus for System x 3650 (Type 7979) to download the ATI video device driver.
- Refer to the readme file for the installation instructions.
