Supported systems: IBM® System x3250 M2 Type 4190 and Type 4194

Follow the network operating system (NOS) installation instructions provided in this document in sequential order unless these instructions advise you otherwise. Windows and messages might differ from those in this document. Throughout this document, the term select is used to denote the use of arrow keys, the tab key, or Alt + a letter combination to make a selection from a menu. The term click is used to denote the use of a mouse to make a selection.

1.0 What you will need

You must have the following software and hardware for the installation:

  • A licensed copy of Microsoft® Windows® Server 2003.
  • For servers using SAS hard disk drives, a USB diskette drive and an LSI SAS device driver diskette. (To create the device driver diskette refer to 3.1 Creating an LSI SAS device driver diskette
  • Supported hard disk drives. Go to http://www.ibm.com/servers/eserver/serverproven/compat/us/ for the ServerProven® list of supported options and part numbers for the server.
  • If you are using the IBM ServeRAID options, you need the IBM ServeRAID™ 7.10b (or later) Support CD.
2.0 Where to download device drivers and files

You can download device drivers and files from the following sites:

3.0 Installation instructions for Microsoft Windows Server 2003

To install Windows Server 2003, you must first create an LSI SAS or SATA device driver diskette. For SATA hard disk drives, OS uses its native driver.

3.1 Creating an LSI SAS device driver diskette

To create the LSI SAS device driver diskette, complete the following steps:

  1. From an Internet-connected system with a diskette drive, go to http://www.ibm.com/systems/support/supportsite.wss/, under Product Support select System x, and select System x3250 from the list under Product family.
  2. Locate and click the link for the SAS HBA Controller and LSI 1064 Drivers for Windows 2003 - Servers; then, click the executable file link.
  3. When the Terms and Conditions window opens, FTP (Recommended for most users) is the selected default. Click I agree.
  4. In the File Download window, click Save. Create a destination directory where you want to save the files, and click Save. When the download is complete, click Close.
  5. Go to the directory where the files have been saved and double click on the .exe file.
  6. Insert a blank, formatted diskette. Click on Run. In the License Agreement window, click Accept.
  7. In the Driver Update window, click Extract to folder, and either change the directory or leave it as the default directory C:\package.
  8. Click Next twice, and then click Finish.
  9. Go to the C:\package directory and open the i386 folder, and copy all the files in the folder to the floppy diskette.
  10. Use the floppy diskette for installing Windows Server 2003 on a system that has a built-in SAS controller.
3.2 Installing Microsoft Windows Server 2003

To install Microsoft Windows Server 2003, complete the following steps:

  1. If using SAS hard disk drives, connect a USB diskette drive to the server.
  2. Turn on the server and insert the Windows Server 2003 Setup CD into the CD or DVD drive. When you are prompted with the message Press any key to boot from cd, press any key to start the server from the Windows Server 2003 Setup CD.
  3. For SATA hard disk drives, skip to step 9. For SAS hard disk drives, continue to step 4.
  4. When you are prompted to Press F6 if you need to install a third party SCSI or RAID driver, press F6. Windows Server 2003 Setup copies the files from the setup CD. This process takes a few minutes.
  5. When you are prompted to manually specify a controller, select S to specify additional devices.
  6. When you are prompted for the manufacturer-supplied hardware support diskette, insert the LSI SAS for Windows device driver diskette and press Enter.
  7. When the device driver name is displayed, press Enter.
  8. After Windows Server 2003 Setup finishes copying files from the diskette, press Enter.
  9. The Windows Server 2003 Setup then copies files from the installation CD. This process takes several minutes. When you are prompted to install Windows Server 2003, press Enter.
  10. In the License Agreement window, read the agreement, and press F8 to select I Agree.
  11. Windows Server 2003 Setup displays all hard disk storage that is available on the server. Select one of the following options to choose or create a drive partition in which to install Windows Server 2003:
    • Allow Setup to create a partition: To partition the entire hard disk as one primary partition, highlight Non-partitioned space/Unpartitioned space on the hard disk drive and press Enter.
    • Create a Partition: To create a partition, highlight Non-partitioned space on the hard disk drive and press C. You are prompted to indicate how much available space to allocate from the non-partitioned drive. Type the amount of space (in MB) and press Enter.
    • Delete a Partition.
  12. When you are prompted to select a file system, select NTFS file system.

    Notes:

    • Setup formats the selected partition and copies the applicable files to the drive partition. This process takes several minutes.
    • The server restarts to the graphical portion of Setup where Setup continues with the installation of Windows Server 2003. During this process, Setup automatically installs and configures devices in the server. This process takes several minutes.
  13. The Regional Settings default to U.S. settings. Make changes if you do not install the server in the U.S. Click Next.

    Note: To modify the regional settings after installing Windows Server 2003, click Control Panel and click Regional Options.

  14. In the Personalize your software window, when you are prompted for your name and organization, type your name in the Name field and type your organization in the Organization field. The names that you type are used as default server names. Applications that you install later use this information for the product registration and document identification. Click Next.
  15. When you are prompted for the Windows Server 2003 Setup CD-Key, type the Windows Server 2003 Setup CD-Key in the applicable fields. Click Next. (Setup uses the organization name that you entered previously as a suggested name for the server.)
  16. In the Licensing Modes window, select the applicable licensing mode for your organization. Click Next.
  17. In the server Name and Administrator Password window, you are prompted for an administrator password and server name. (Setup uses the organization name, entered previously, as a suggested name for the server.) Type the server name and password. Click Next.

    Note: Passwords are case sensitive. Be sure to use a combination of uppercase and lowercase letters with at least one number for your password.

  18. In the Time Zone window, set the current time. To change the date, click the button to the right of the date. To change the time, highlight the value that you want to change and enter the correct values using the keyboard or the Up Arrow and Down Arrow keys. Click Next.

    Note: Windows Server 2003 services perform many tasks that are dependent on the accuracy of the time and date settings of the server. Be sure to select the correct time zone for the server location to avoid problems.

  19. In the Networking Settings window, select Typical or Custom settings. If you are prompted, type the applicable network information. Click Next to install Windows networking components.
  20. In the Workgroup or Computer Domain window, select one of the following options:
    • No, this computer is not on a network, it is a network without a domain.
    • Yes, make this computer a member of the following domain.

    Type the workgroup or domain name in the applicable fields. Click Next.

    Setup installs and configures the remaining operating system components according to the options you specified. The display in the left column shows the amount of time remaining until the Windows Server 2003 installation is completed. This process might take several minutes.

    When Windows Server 2003 setup has completed installation, the server automatically restarts.

  21. After the Windows Server 2003 operating system starts, press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to log on. When the desktop is displayed, the Windows server Post-Setup Security Updates wizard starts. If the server is connected to the Internet, this wizard helps you download software security updates and configures the system to receive updates automatically.
  22. After closing the Security Updates wizard, the Manage Your Server wizard launches automatically. This wizard helps you to add and configure additional roles for the server, such as File Server, DHCP Server, Active Directory, and DNS. For more information, click Read about server roles in the wizard.
    Note:
    You can skip this step and launch the wizard later by clicking Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Configure Your Server Wizard.
  23. Insert the Windows Server CD 2 into the CD or DVD drive and click Ok.
  24. Click Next.
  25. Accept the license agreement and then click Next.
4.0 Post installation instructions: Installing device drivers

After the installation is complete, make sure that you have the latest device drivers and firmware for the server. To install the device drivers and to identify hardware that is not functioning, open Device Manager. In Device Manager, non-functioning devices are usually listed under Other Devices and are indicated by a yellow exclamation point. To open Device Manager, complete the following steps:

  1. Click Start.
  2. Right-click My Computer.
  3. Click Manage and select Device Manager in the left pane.

Use the procedures in the following sections to install the device drivers and to resolve any Unknown device.

4.1 Installing the Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet device driver

To install the Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet device driver, complete the following steps:

  1. Go to http://www.ibm.com/systems/support/supportsite.wss/, under Product Support select System x and then select System x3250 from the list under Product family. Select the Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet driver file, and then click the executable file link.
  2. When the Terms and Conditions window opens, FTP (Recommended for most users) is the selected default, click I agree.
  3. In the File Download window, click Save. Create a destination directory where you want to save the files and click Save. When the download is complete, click Close.
  4. Go to the destination directory where the files are located and double click on the .exe file.
  5. In the Welcome Wizard click Next.
  6. In the License Agreement window, read the agreement, accept the terms, and click Next to continue.
  7. Type c:\drivers\nic for the folder where the files are to be saved. Click Next, and then click Finish.
  8. Navigate to c:\drivers\nic and open launch.exe.
  9. Click the Driver Installer button.
  10. In the Welcome window, click Next.
  11. In the License Agreement window, read the agreement, then select I accept the terms in the license agreement and click Next to continue.
  12. Click Install to begin the installation.
  13. When prompted to restart the serve, select No, and click Finish.
  14. In the NetXtreme Software windows, click Exit.

To configure the network, click in sequential order: Start -> Control Panel -> Network Connections and select New Connection Wizard to set up the network connection.

To configure the network protocols, right-click Local Area Connection in the Network connections window, and then click Properties.

To join a domain, click Start -> Control Panel -> System, click the Computer Name tab, and then click Change.

4.2 Installing the ATI ES1000 video device driver

To install the ATI ES1000 video device driver, complete the following steps:

  1. Go to http://www.ibm.com/systems/support/supportsite.wss/, under Product Support select System x and System x3250 from the list under Product family. Click the ATI Custom Display driver for Microsoft Windows Server 2003, and then click the file link.
  2. When the Terms and Conditions window opens, FTP (Recommended for most users) is the selected default, click I agree.
  3. In the File Download window, click Save. Create a destination directory where you want to save the files and click Save. When the download is complete, click Close.
  4. Go to the destination directory where the files are located and double click on the .exe file.
  5. In the License Agreement window, read the agreement, then click Accept to continue.
  6. In the Driver Update window, check Extract to folder, and either change the directory or leave it as the default directory C:\package. Click Next twice, and then click Finish.
  7. Go to the C:\package directory, open the ATI folder and click on the Setup.exe file.
  8. In the Welcome window, click Next.
  9. In the License Agreement window, read the license agreement, and then click Yes.
  10. Select No, I will restart my computer later, and click Finish.
4.3 Installing the IBM system board device drivers

To install the IBM system board device drivers, complete the following steps:

  1. Go to http://www.ibm.com/systems/support/supportsite.wss/, under Product Support select System x and System x3250 from the list under Product family, then click the Intel® Chipset software Installation Utility link, and then click the executable file link.
  2. When the Terms and Conditions window opens, FTP (Recommended for most users) is the selected default, click I agree.
  3. In the File Download window, click Save. Create a destination directory where you want to save the files and click Save. When the download is complete, click Close.
  4. Go to the destination directory where the files are located and double click on the .exe file.
  5. In the License Agreement window, read the agreement and click Accept.
  6. In the Driver Update window, check Extract to folder, and either change the directory or leave it as the default directory C:\package. Click Next twice, and then click Finish.
  7. Go to the C:\package directory, open the Intel folder and click on the Setup.exe file.
  8. In the Welcome window, click Next.
  9. In the License Agreement window, read the license agreement, click Yes, and then click Next.
  10. After the device drivers are installed, click Next and Finish; then restart the server.
